Dear Dermatology Resident Applicant: Thank you for your interest in the Dermatology Residency Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston. We participate in ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service), and each applicant must apply through his or her school of graduation. Foreign medical graduates will need to contact the ECFMG at (215) 386-5900 or www.ECFMG.org. Our program is approved by the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Dermatology and the American Board of Dermatology for three years of training. Our primary objective is to produce well-trained, competent clinical dermatologists. However, the program has sufficient latitude to allow preparation for either private practice or an academic career. Besides the clinical research, in which all trainees participate, there are opportunities for basic research. Our training program utilizes the facilities of the UTMB Hospitals. We have an active conference schedule that is supplemented by participation in the monthly Houston Dermatological Society meeting. In addition, trainees are encouraged to participate in a variety of regional and national dermatology society meetings. We accept two or three new residents each year. Trainees are selected by a Residency Selection Committee consisting of our faculty and resident staff. Selections are based on past academic performance, recommendations, and assessments by the committee members during a personal interview. Occasional past residents have been board certified in pathology, dermatopathology, or internal medicine. The UTMB Department of Pediatrics sponsors a combined 5-year residency in pediatrics and dermatology (one resident selected every other year). Rankings are submitted by the applicant and the institution following the same schedule utilized by the National Residency Matching Program for PGY-1 training positions. Applicants match into both PGY-1 and PGY-2 positions at the same time. Although this option provides a distinct advantage for students applying for both PGY-1 and PGY-2 positions, it does not prevent us from accepting applicants for PGY-2 positions who have already completed their initial year of training. We are now accepting applications for first-year dermatology residency training (PGY-2) that begins on July 1, 2009. Applications must be received by November 1, 2007 to be considered. Applicants who are selected for interview will be asked to visit Galveston in January 2008. Invitations for January interviews are usually sent in December. Between 20 and 30 applicants are interviewed each year. Sincerely, Richard F. Wagner, Jr., M.D. |

The Department of Dermatology was established at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in 1920. The objectives of the department are to provide excellent teaching for medical students, residents and fellows in order to foster outstanding clinical care for Texas residents, model patient care, and the advancement of knowledge through scholarly activities. The UTMB Dermatology Residency Program is fully accredited and includes two or three residency positions for each year of the three-year program. It is the oldest dermatology training program west of the Mississippi and has a long record of producing high-quality dermatologists. Completion of an internship is required before entering the residency program. The basic emphasis in our program is the development of a firm foundation for the practice of dermatology by learning to diagnose and treat skin diseases and cutaneous manifestations of systemic diseases. Participation in research is expected to round out the learning process through our Dermatology Scholarly Project. Any resident presenting a paper at a national meeting may do so at departmental expense. We expect our graduating residents to be board certifiable, to be competitive candidates for fellowship or academic positions, and to be excellent clinicians. |

Thank you for your interest in the Dermatology Residency Program at UTMB. We participate in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) described below. Please request that the National Board of Medical Examiners supply ERAS with an official USMLE transcript so that we may receive your board scores. Our program is approved by the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Dermatology and the American Board of Dermatology for three years of training. We accept two or three new residents each year. Trainees are selected by a Residency Selection Committee consisting of our faculty and resident staff. Selections are based on past academic performance, recommendations, and assessments by the committee members during a personal interview. We appoint our residents through the National Residency Matching program "Advance Placement for Students" option. Under the advanced placement for student option, rankings are submitted by the applicant and the institution following the same schedule utilized by the National Residency Matching Program for PGY-1 training positions. Applicants match into both PGY-1 and PGY-2 positions at the same time. Although this option provides a distinct advantage for students applying for both PGY-1 and PGY-2 positions, it does not prevent us from accepting applicants for PGY-2 positions who have already completed their initial year of training. Applications for our first-year residency program, which commences on July 1, 2009, must be submitted by November 1, 2007. For additional information, contact Kimberly Cooper via email at kjcooper@utmb.edu. Invitations for interviews will be sent to selected candidates in December. | Internship The American Board of Dermatology requires all residents to have a postgraduate year of medical training in a specialty approved by the Board (i.e., internal medicine, general surgery, family practice, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics, or emergency medicine) before starting their dermatology training. It is the responsibility of the applicant to apply for a PGY-1 position. An applicant who is interested in pursuing an internship in internal medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch should contact the Internal Medicine Residency Office at (409) 772-2654. Interviews with both the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Dermatology often can be scheduled on the same day. First Year The residency begins on July 1. House staff orientation is usually held during the last two days of June. First-year residents will staff the Residents' Dermatology Clinic, assist in the Faculty Clinics as assigned, attend the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Clinic (Tuesday), 39th Street Clinic in Galveston (Wednesday), Texas City Clinic (Thursday), and Clear Lake Clinic (Thursday). Procedures are also scheduled for the afternoons. Second Year Second-year residents will spend six months of the year staffing the General Residents' Clinic in the mornings and will see consults in the afternoons, except for Fridays, when they will assist Dr. Raimer in staffing the Pediatric Dermatology Clinic. Four to six months (Tues, Wed, Thurs) are spent with Dr. Wagner on the Dermatological Surgery Service. This is in addition to the surgical experience gained during all three years of residency. Third Year Third-year residents will alternate assuming Chief Resident duties and will spend mornings and afternoons as assigned staffing the Residents' Clinics. One afternoon a week, they will staff the TDCJ Clinic; and twice a month, they will hold a Telemedicine Clinic for the TDCJ. For six months of the year, a third-year resident will sign out slides with our dermatopathologists. Senior residents typically rotate through the Geriatric Dermatology Clinic in Santa Fe, Texas once or twice a month. Electives Third-year residents can enroll in a two-week off-campus elective that will enable them to acquire skills not offered by the UTMB Dermatology Residency Program. After completing the off-campus elective, senior residents must make a departmental presentation about their experience. Research by Dermatology Residents Original research projects can be performed with faculty in any of the following categories:
