Awards and Competitions The Oslerian Award for Translational Research To compete for this award, the applicant will write an original 1000-word essay describing the implications and potential importance of his/her research avenue or discovery for the betterment of human health. The successful essay should explicitly link results of the applicant's scientific inquiry with the humanistic ideals espoused by Osler and emulated to this day. All areas of research are eligible for this award, both clinical and basic science. Judging will be based both on the applicant's essay and submitted abstract. Up to 5 winners will receive a $100 cash prize, a plaque, and a book. Deadline will be April 4, 2008. Formatting Guidelines:
Awards for Excellence of Research There will be awards given for both oral and poster presentations, but the award listing in this brochure is TENTATIVE, and subject to change. The purpose of the awards is to recognize and to encourage outstanding research in the basic and clinical sciences. These awards are described in detail below. (See Award Presentation Note below) Students competing for awards must plan on attending selected activities. Any student whose abstract is accepted as an oral (slide) presentation may participate in the Forum. However, in order to compete for awards, a student in this category must also submit a manuscript. All participants presenting in the poster presentation category are eligible for poster awards, unless someone other than the person listed as the first author is presenting the work.
Overall Awards for Oral Presentation AMA Awards for Outstanding Research These awards are sponsored by the American Medical Association. One award is given for the best paper presented in clinical research and consists of a $500 cash award and a plaque. An additional $500 cash award and plaque is being given for overall excellence of research.
Sigma Xi Award For Excellence In Research
Biochemistry/Molecular Biology AwardThis award is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Human Biological Chemistry & Genetics and is presented to the participant having the best paper and oral presentation in the fields of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $200. Cardiology Award This award is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiology and is presented to the participant presenting the best cardiology research. This award consists of a plaque and a cash award for $300. Cell Biology/Human Genetics AwardThis award is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Human Biological Chemistry & Genetics and is presented to the participant having the best paper and oral presentation in the fields of Cell Biology and Human Genetics. The award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $200. Edward S. Reynolds Investigative Pathology Memorial AwardThis award is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Pathology in the amount of $200 and a plaque. The award is given for the best student research representing a scientific study pertinent to the basic mechanisms of disease or cell injury. Internal Medicine AwardThis award is given for the best paper in Internal Medicine. It is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Department of Internal Medicine. It consists of $200 and a plaque. James E. Beall II, Award in NeuroscienceThis award was established by The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Galveston and is presented to the participant with the outstanding paper in neuroscience. It consists of a plaque and a cash award of $150. March of Dimes Birth Defects FoundationThe March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation presents a $500 cash award and plaque to the participant with the best paper and presentation in the area of genetics and birth defects. (Tentative) McLaughlin Award(s)These awards, established at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, are given for the best paper in the fields of infectious disease and immunology. It consists of a $200 cash award and a plaque. Medical Humanities Award This award is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Institute for the Medical Humanities. It is a $200 cash award and plaque given to the participant with the best paper and presentation in the Medical Humanities. Pediatric Award This award is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Department of Pediatrics. The $300 cash award and plaque are presented to the participant with the best paper and presentation in the field of pediatrics. (Tentative) Mason Guest Memorial Award in Physiology & Biophysics This award is sponsored by the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Department of Physiology & Biophysics, in memory of Dr. Mason Guest who was the department's chairman from 1951 through 1973. A $200 cash award and a plaque are presented to the participant having the best paper and oral presentation in the fields of physiology/biophysics. Psychiatry & Behavioral Science AwardThis $100 cash award and plaque is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Science. The award is given to the participant with the most outstanding paper and presentation in the field of psychiatry. (Tentative) Surgery AwardThis award is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Department of Surgery, and is given to the participant having the best paper and presentation in the field of surgery. This award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $200. UTMB Cancer Center Award in Oncologic Research The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Cancer Center has allocated this award for the best paper in the field of oncology. It consists of $150 cash award and a plaque. UTMB Center on Aging AwardThis award is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Center on Aging. It is a $500 cash award and plaque given to the participant with the best paper in the field of geriatrics and aging. (Tentative) UTMB Dermatology AwardThis award is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Department of Dermatology. It is a $200 cash award and plaque given to the participant with the best paper and presentation in the field of Dermatology. UTMB Orthopedics AwardThis award is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. It is given to the participant with the best paper and presentation in the area of Orthopedics. It consists of an engraved plaque and a cash award of $150.
NSRF Overall Poster AwardsThese poster presentations awards are given to those participants demonstrating overall excellence of research. Each of these awards consist of a plaque and cash award.
First Place - $200.00 Best Overall Poster Presentation in the Area of Infection and Immunity Research This award is sponsored by The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Institute for Infections and Immunity. This is a $300 cash award and plaque given to the participant having the best poster presentation in the field of Infection and Immunity. Sigma Xi Awards for Excellence in Research The

presentations demonstrating excellence in research.
