About the Academy

The Academy of Master Teachers is an honorary service organization recently established at UTMB to embrace a set of standards for excellence in teaching and scholarship in education, to recognize master educators and to provide guidance and mentorship in teaching skills to interested faculty members. The academy and the position of director are primarily supported with private funds from alumni and friends of UTMB. Membership will be open to faculty in each of the university’s four schools. (View Program PowerPoint Presentation)

The goal of the academy is to honor and reward UTMB’s best teaching faculty, based on rigorous and objective criteria, and allow them to give back to the UTMB educational community to enhance the university’s teaching mission. The academy will:

  • Provide programs that develop faculty teaching skills,

  • Set standards for teaching excellence and educational scholarship,

  • Provide peer evaluation of teaching activities and educational accomplishment,

  • Offer resources and recognition, including grants, for innovative programs and approaches, and

  • Provide incentives through recognition, as well as financial rewards for excellence in teaching and educational scholarship.

Director Ruth E. Levine, MD,  worked with a task force of faculty members from all four schools to develop procedures and standards for academy membership. Special appreciation and recognition goes to these dedicated members of that team:

Vicki Freeman, PhD Ann Frye, PhD Susan Gerik, MD
Susan Grinslade, PhD, RN Steve Lieberman, MD Cheyenne Martin, PhD, RN
Michael McGinnis, PhD Bruce Niebuhr, PhD Billy Philips, Jr., PhD
Victor Sierpina, MD William Willis, Jr., MD, PhD Richard Rahr, MD

Faculty was selected for the academy according to certain criteria. The members will serve three year terms and may be eligible to reapply after that time. There will be two inductions in 2007 and one opportunity to apply each year thereafter.

The Academy of Master Teachers provides an opportunity to ensure that UTMB’s outstanding faculty are widely recognized for their success in preparing students in all fields.

Application Process

How to become a member. (Live Web Stream of February 6 presentation livepresentation2-6-07)

Those seeking membership should consider whether they have the time available to devote 5-10 hours per month to dedicate to the service of the Academy. Additionally, building a portfolio is a time consuming process that may include workshops in addition to the effort just gathering personal information. Please note that though the first induction occurred in Spring 2007, but for this year only, there will be an additional opportunity to apply in the Fall.

All Fall 2007 applicants will be asked to submit a letter of intent to Dr. Ruth Levine and email it to Carol McCoggins on or before 5:00 p.m. August 1.  Should the Academy receive an overwhelming response, a lottery process may be used to determine which faculty will be asked to submit application. Those faculty will be asked to submit 3 copies each of an educational portfolio, a CV, and a letter of recommendation from their Chair. The portfolio will be the primary basis for selection into the Academy. Each applicant will be reviewed by a primary and secondary reviewer who will make recommendations to the panel. The members of the panel will study and score each portfolio then vote on the selection into the Academy. (Click here for more information regarding the preferred application organization.)

To build your portfolio, please refer to the Academy's Portfolio Template and the subsequent Companion Document. These will be the tools used to complete personal portfolios for review by the Selection Committee. For assistance, workshops will be offered and mentors will be available.

Letters of Intent

This letter should be no more than 200 words and include reasons for an interest in the Academy in addition to goals wished to be accomplished and the manner of service that might be offered.
