Dr. Ameredes Gives Research Talk at National Youth Leadership Forum NEW!

Dr. Bill T. Ameredes, Ph.D., presented a talk on Respiratory Research to over 100 high school students attending the National Youth Leadership Forum at UTMB on July 22, 2008 at the Levin Hall Auditorium. The talk covered the theory and design of research, with examples of how research has advanced our understanding of asthma and its potential therapies, including development of recent assays for disease biomarkers. Dr. Ameredes said, “The important emphases of this talk were future leadership, and how research is integral to our lives.” Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ameredes on this important presentation to young students, furthering the educational and research missions of this institution.

New incoming APICS Fellows! NEW!

Please join us in welcoming the new Pulmonary and Allergy fellows!

Bill T. Ameredes, Ph.D., Inducted as Member of UTMB Academy of Master Teachers NEW!
We offer hearty congratulations to Dr. Bill Ameredes on his recent induction for membership in the UTMB Academy of Master Teachers, slated to begin August 1, 2008. Dr. Ameredes has been teaching for over 25 years, and most recently here at UTMB, he has taught Respiratory Physiology in the Second Year Medical Student Course and the Graduate School Physiology Course, in addition to other teaching/learning venues such as the APICS Experts Didactic Lecture Series, and APICS and NIEHS journal clubs. He is the Director of the new APICS/Department of Medicine Fellows Research Course, which started as an APICS Divisional Course in 2006, and has expanded this year to service all Divisions within the Department of Internal Medicine at UTMB, in part with the help of a Faculty Development and Educational Innovations Grant, from the Academy of Master Teachers. Dr. Ameredes said, “Induction into the Academy is a dream-come-true for me, because a main function of the Academy is to recognize and support teaching excellence, oftentimes under-recognized and under-supported at many other institutions. Because it is only one of about twenty teaching academies in the nation, it serves as a model within the UT System, and other institutions around the country. As a lifelong teacher, I appreciate the fact that this Academy is designed to lead growth and development of education, as well as supporting development of young teachers of the future, here at UTMB.”  Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ameredes on this outstanding accomplishment.

Bill T. Ameredes, Ph.D. Awarded Educational Grant
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Bill Ameredes on his award of a Faculty Development and Educational Innovations Grant, from the Academy of Master Teachers, at UTMB. Dr. Ameredes received this award in support of his Research Education Course for Physician Fellows, a course which originated as his APICS Division Summer Research Mini-Course, in July of 2006. The new course will again take place in July, and have a similar focus of exposing physician fellows-in-training to research content and techniques, as part of their training in research in the fulfillment of their fellowship requirements, but will now be expanded to include all interested fellows within the Department of Internal Medicine who are entering their first research year of their fellowship. “It is a real honor to have this course recognized and supported by the Academy of Master Teachers, the premiere teaching group here at UTMB, and one of only twenty such institutional teaching academies throughout the nation,” Ameredes said. We will have future announcements regarding the availability, sign-up dates, and course calendars posted on this website, soon.

"Personalizing" Asthma Therapy
Using unique capabilities of UTMB's NIH-supported Proteomics Center and Severe Asthma Research Program, researchers in the university's Sealy Center for Molecular Medicine have taken the first steps toward applying the new and powerful concept of "personalized medicine" to asthma. Using recently developed biochemical screening techniques, they've discovered that asthma can be classified into distinct subtypes, each with its own "protein profile." The diagnostic tests that evolve out of these efforts will enable the development of better-targeted, more effective therapies for each individual patient's particular variety of disease---making asthma much easier and less expensive to treat in the not-too-distant future.

APICS Fellows Out and About:
Dr. Bradford Broussard recently made a presentation at the quarterly City Wide Pulmonary and Critical Care conference held at Baylor University in Houston.  Fellows and faculty from three major medical centers were in attendance.  He presented an interesting case of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis that held the audience quite captive and stimulated much discussion.  Dr. Broussard also relayed his experience with the rarely done procedure of whole lung lavage.  Strong work for stepping up Dr. Broussard!
