Dr. Murugan receives award

The Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, Immunology, Critical Care, and Sleep (APICS) is proud to announce that Anandhi T. Murugan, M.D., MPH., a first year Fellow in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, recently received an award from the CHEST Foundation of the American College of Chest Physicians.

 The CHEST Foundation Clinical Research in Women’s Health grant was awarded to Dr. Murugan for her submission, “Menstrual Differences in Airway Inflammation in Asthma”.

 She will receive a monetary award, as well as, complimentary registration to the 2007 CHEST Conference in Chicago where she will be presented with her official award certificate.

Dr. Valentine Joins APICS

The Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, Immunology, Critical Care and Sleep (APICS) of the Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to announce Dr. Vincent G. Valentine, a transplant specialist, has joined our Faculty as a Professor of Medicine. Dr. Valentine will also hold the title of Medical Director of Transplantation at UTMB’s Multi Organ Transplant Center. Dr. Valentine comes from the Ochsner Multi-Organ Transplant Center where he held the position of Medical Director of Lung Transplantation. He has also been named one of the “Best Doctors” in the country 3 out of the past 4 years. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Valentine to UTMB.

APICS in the news…

Dr. David Redding, a current Allergy and Immunology Fellow at the University of Texas Medical Branch’s Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, Immunology, Critical Care, and Sleep (APICS) will be featured on TLC’s (The Learning Channel) “Diagnosis X” program along with his twin brother, Dr. Alan Redding, a current Allergy and Immunology Fellow at the University of Tennessee’s Health Science Center. The show involves a patient with a very rare condition known as IPEX syndrome and will be aired on August 1, 2007, at 8:00pm.

Dr. Cardenas Receives Award

The Division of Allergy, Pulmonary, Immunology, Critical Care and Sleep (APICS) of the Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to announce Dr. Victor J. Cardenas, Jr., Director, Division of APICS, has been named an alumni member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Alpha Omega Alpha commonly referred to as AOA, can be thought of as the “Phi Beta Kappa for medical schools.” As the only national honor medical society, its mission, developed over the past one hundred years, has been to recognize and enhance professionalism, academic excellence, service, and leadership within the profession.” Please join us in congratulating Dr. Cardenas on his award.

Bill T. Ameredes, Ph.D., Tours NASA Space Center

Bill T. Ameredes, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Medicine was selected to attend a meeting of the Texas Workforce Commission/Houston Galveston Area Council, and to tour the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, on August 30, 2007, along with other faculty and administrators from universities and colleges in the southeast Texas region. The meeting was convened to inform academic educators about the strategic goals of the JSC Office of Education, and the workforce projections necessary for NASA beyond 2010, when the Shuttle program discontinues, and the emphasis will move to the Constellation program focusing on the Moon and Mars.

 

Bill T. Ameredes, Ph.D., Appointed as FDA Expert Consultant

Bill T. Ameredes, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Medicine in the Allergy, Pulmonary, Immunology, Critical Care, and Sleep (APICS) Division at the University of Texas Medical Branch, has been appointed as a special expert Consultant for the Pulmonary and Allergy Drug Advisory Committee (PADAC) of the Federal Drug Administration, beginning October 14, 2007. The purpose of the PADAC is to provide the FDA with independent advice from external/academic experts on issues related to human Pulmonary- and Allergy-associated drugs, biological products, and medical devices. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ameredes on this important federal service appointment.

SHIBU THOMAS, MD, one of the APICS division’s Pulmonary Transplant Fellows was on hand to welcome the celebrity chef, Martin Yan. Yan visited UTMB’s Café on the Court Wednesday October 3rd to meet with fans and sign autographs of his cookbook. One of Dr. Thomas’ many hobbies is cooking so he was ecstatic to meet one of his childhood idols.

Calhoun, Sealy and Smith Distinguished Chair, Professor and Vice Chair for Research, Department of Internal Medicine, for having his recent article "Molecular phenotyping of severe asthma using pattern recognition of bronchoalveolar lavage-derived cytokines", co-authored with Dr. Allan Brasier, Professor, Division of Endocrinology, selected as an Editor's Choice from the prestigious Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (JACI).

Dr. Sharma's recent accomplishment

Please join us in congratulating one of our own Pulmonary/Critical Care faculty, Dr. Gulshan Sharma, on his recent election as a Fellow of the Sealy Center on Aging.  The Sealy Center on Aging has been identified as one of the top aging research programs in the country.  The Sealy Center works to facilitate communication and collaborative scholarship among researchers at UTMB related to Aging.  The Fellows Program recognizes faculty from all departments and schools within UTMB based on their contributions in the field of aging.  Currently there are more than 40 Sealy Fellows and 20 Senior Fellows representing a wide range of disciplines and departments.  We are proud to have Dr. Sharma join such a distinguished group.

 

Bill T. Ameredes, Ph.D. Appointed to AJP Editorial Review Board

Dr. Bill T. Ameredes, Ph.D., of the Allergy, Pulmonary, Immunology, Critical Care and Sleep (APICS) Division of the Department of Internal Medicine at UTMB, has been appointed as a member of the Editorial Review Board for the Lung, Cellular, and Molecular Biology edition of American Journal of Physiology, published by the American Physiological Society, beginning on January 1, 2008. The American Journal of Physiology publishes peer-reviewed results of research investigations, with focus on cellular and molecular physiologic mechanisms within the lung, from investigators from around the world, and can be accessed on the web at:www.the-aps.org/publications/ajplung.
