The Center to Eliminate Health Disparities (CEHD) at the University of Texas Medical Branch, located on Galveston Island, Texas, is hiring three positions: Health Policy Research Fellow, Health and Social Media Program Manager, and Health Disparities Analyst. 1. Health Policy Research Fellow

Job summary:
The purpose of this position is to advance policy research, and support training and education of health professional students in health policy in relation to health equity and social determinants of health. Current areas of policy related research and teaching at CEHD include reducing disparities in UTMB patient care and outcomes, advancing health equity through school health initiatives related to social determinants of health, the impact of health reform and strengthening the primary care system, environmental justice, and global health issues. Fellows have the opportunity to develop other areas of research, and the fellowship is renewable.

Essential job functions:

Conduct research and support for priority CEHD initiatives, including those related to advancing health policy in relation to health disparities, health in all policies approaches, health impact assessment, intersectoral action for health, environmental justice, and/or health equity in global health contexts
Support teaching on issues of health policy within the medical school curriculum, and with other students as needed
Educate and liaise with community regarding health policy issues
Prepare articles for publication
Assist with background research for and preparation of grant proposals

Education/experience:

Master’s or doctoral degree in public health, social sciences, planning or policy, or related field. At least 2 years of experience working on projects related to health equity and social determinants of health. Experience in grant writing, project planning and management, and policy analysis important. Experience working in partnership with community organizations and on action-research projects. Strong quantitative and/or qualitative analysis skills a plus, such as database analysis or ethnographic analysis. Teaching experience preferred. Spanish language skills a plus.

Skills and knowledge:

Understanding of health disparities and efforts to address them through health system reforms and/or social determinants of health
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience researching health policy issues
Ability to perform efficient desktop research and synthesize information quickly
Ability to work effectively individually and in a team setting
Attention to detail and flexibility in task management

Salary range:
$50,000-75,000, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits package.

2. Health and Social Media Program Manager

Job summary:

This position is responsible for overseeing, coordinating and maintaining an institutional approach to advancing patient and population health through social media tools.

Essential job functions:

Create, develop and oversee a social media strategy to advance patient health and quality of care, and support population health initiatives.
Coordinate the planning and oversee the execution of a social media campaign tailored to local population health needs and specific patient needs.
Work with a variety of departments and leaders in the institution.
Analyze and interpret social media and media tracking data.
Produce reports related to the progress of the social media initiative at UTMB and its impact.
Produce and post content in a timely fashion.
Regularly update project relevant social media platforms.
Perform desktop research for contribution to publications.

Education/experience:

Master’s in Public Health with experience in using social media to advance patient and population health. Minimum of two years of experience working on health and social media projects. Training/experience specific to social media as applied to issues of health disparities and social determinants of health is preferred. Experience in grant writing a plus. Spanish language skills a plus.

Extensive knowledge of the use of various social media platforms to advance health promotion and patient care
Desktop research skills and ability to synthesize information quickly

3. Health Disparities Analyst

Job summary:

The primary responsibility for this position is to undertake a specific initiative involving research on health disparities, utilizing data from the UTMB health information system to identify opportunities for improvements in patient care, reduction of disparities, and increasing equity in patient care settings. Additional research projects can be developed according to availability of time after meeting the primary job responsibility.

Essential job functions:

Develop data fields to perform disparities analyses within a hospital health information system
Develop and implement processes for exporting EMR data for statistical analyses
Analyze EMR data using appropriate statistical techniques to identify disparities in clinical indicators
Contribute to the development of improvement targets and goals to reduce disparities
Support the development of the disparities reduction plan based on analyses
Contribute to the development of scholarly products related to the project
Assist with grant proposal preparation and submission
Collaborate with other health system departments as well as community organizations and agencies to develop programs to address health disparities

Knowledge/skills/abilities:

Quantitative Analysis and analysis of large datasets
Knowledge related to health disparities and social determinants of health
Scientific & Technical writing experience
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to operate in a team environment and independently
Attention to detail and flexibility in task management

Education/experience:

Master’s or doctoral degree in health services research, health economics, public health, biostatistics, or related field. Previous experience with database creation and management, and in analyzing data from health information systems. Excellent knowledge of Statistical software (SAS, Stata, or SPSS). Experience working on issues of health disparities required. Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and/or on environmental justice issues a plus.

Salary range:

$45,000-65,000, commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits package.
