Later in December 2011, another Encuentro was held in Corpus Christi that focused on the unique challenges facing port communities. Organized by Air Alliance Houston, with speakers from the CEHD and NIEHS COEC, t.e.j.a.s., the Environmental Protection Agency, the Los Angeles Ports Network, and many others, this event allowed residents from port communities all along the Texas coast, as well as major land-based ports of entry, the opportunity to share concerns, lessons learned, and learn new information and skills that potentially can be put to use in their efforts to combat environmental injustices in their communities. CEHD presented talks on the utility of health impact assessments in driving evidence-based planning and on using low-technology community mapping approaches to catalyze community interest in environmental, social, economic, and health-related issues within their neighborhoods.
