UTMB Cancer Center
The UTMB Cancer Center was established in 2005 through the merging of the Sealy Center for Cancer Cell Biology, the Educational Cancer Center and the clinical components of cancer care at UTMB. The formation of the center fused the university’s separate resources into a cohesive and integrated enterprise dedicated to cancer diagnosis and treatment, research, education and outreach.
This merging immediately reaped benefits in terms of the new center’s ability to compete for national research funds and also to attract high-quality clinical and research faculty to UTMB. In its initial years, the center enjoined five new faculty members, established a mentoring committee for junior faculty, initiated the cancer cell biology track and added two new courses to the graduate school curriculum.
In 2006, the center was awarded a $4 million gift from The Sealy & Smith Foundation that provided for establishment of a tumor tissue bank, an imaging facility, a centralized operation for oncology clinical trials, as well as recruitment of translational cancer researchers and an endowed chair. This early and generous grant helped propel UTMB to a position among the top cancer centers in the nation.
Today, the mission of the UTMB Cancer Center reads: to coalesce all ongoing efforts in cancer research, clinical care, education and prevention into a larger cancer center effort with multidisciplinary, multi-departmental and multi-institutional components to provide the most up-to-date and compassionate care for the cancer patient.
