A Message from the Director

Every one of us, unfortunately, is acquainted with cancer. We each have a relative, a friend, a co-worker or an acquaintance whose life has been impacted by this disease. Each of us knows the fear and devastation cancer causes not only to the individual living with the disease, but also to his or her loved ones. Cancer, in fact, surpassed heart disease as the number one killer in America in 2005.

Those of us who have chosen cancer research, patient care or education as our life's work are motivated by our will to bring closure to this disease and to end the human suffering that comes with it.

Clinically, UTMB is emerging as a primary destination for patients with certain forms of cancer. Specifically, we have carved a niche of clinical expertise—linked to the important research work we are also conducting in these areas—in gastrointestinal (GI), liver, prostate, breast, brain, and head and neck cancers. With a major comprehensive cancer center but 50 miles from our cancer facility in Galveston, we believe our greatest success will be derived from becoming world-class experts in certain cancers, and we are strategically positioning ourselves toward that goal.

The third component of our efforts in cancer comes in the form of education and outreach, not only to patients, but to a new generation of medical faculty and physicians. Our programs in preventive medicine and community outreach are second to none in the state of Texas and are atop the list of national efforts, as well. The UTMB Cancer Center name is rapidly becoming synonymous with best practices in cancer education and outreach, an effort that has far-reaching effects in our fight against this disease.

Having been involved in cancer research and patient care for all of my career, I am most proud of what’s been accomplished by the UTMB Cancer Center in recent memory and what is on the horizon for our facility in the very near future. We are well on our way to becoming one of the nation’s leading institutions for cancer clinical expertise, research and education, and with the support of UTMB, and its highly dedicated faculty, staff, volunteers, donors and friends, we certainly expect to get there.

Sincerely,
Dr. Evers signature
