The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is one of 15 campuses of the University of Texas System. As a major academic health science center and the State of Texas referral center, we are dedicated to educating health science professionals and researchers, caring for patients, solving biomedical puzzles through scientific inquiry, and community service. UTMB’s commitment to care for the sick and injured regardless of their ability to pay, to educate and employ a diverse work force of health professionals, to always find new ways to do things better, to encourage lifelong learning, and to enrich the community it serves, has thrived for more than a century.

Established in 1891 as the University of Texas Medical Department, UTMB has grown from one building, 23 students and 13 faculty members, to a modern health science center with more than 70 major buildings, more than 2800 students and more than 1600 faculty. The 100 acre campus includes four schools, two institutes for advanced study, a major medical library, a network of hospitals and clinics that provide a full range of primary and specialized medical care, an affiliated Shriners Burns Hospital, and numerous research facilities.

Unlike most other academic health science centers, UTMB owns and operates all of its hospitals. The hub of the inpatient care complex is John Sealy Hospital, a 12 story tower with a 25 room operating suite. Other hospitals include Waverly Smith Pavilion, Children’s Hospital, Rebecca Sealy Hospital, and Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Hospital, which provides health care services to the state’s inmates. Outpatient services are provided through a network of well over 100 clinics. UTMB also features a sophisticated Emergency Department complete with hyperbaric chamber.

UTMB records more than half a million outpatient visits and more than 35,000 inpatient admissions a year. While some patients seek primary care, many others are referred by physicians throughout the state, nation, and world for the specialized diagnostic and treatment resources available at this major medical center. UTMB’s special care areas include the Infant Special Care Unit; a regional extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) center; cardiothoracic surgery division; an adult burns unit, featuring a human skin bank; a neurological trauma center, a cancer center; a renal service featuring dialysis and renal transplantation program. A leader in transplant surgery, UTMB performs kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung, and bone marrow transplants.

UTMB Nursing Service welcomes nursing students to investigate employment opportunities as unlicensed assistive personnel. Individualized orientation and learning experiences offer students the opportunity to gain knowledge and hands-on clinical experience. Please contact Nurse Recruitment at (409) 747-4712 for more information.
