| The staff who work on the unit fulfill
varied responsibilities. Some of the staff you will encounter include: Registered Nurses
RNs plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care, and assume a leadership/supervisory role.
One RN will be designated as the Charge Nurse, who supervises staff and patient care
assignment.
Licensed Vocational Nurses
LVNs receive supervision from the RN, and perform routine patient care assignments.
Patient Care Technicians
PCTs provide assistance for licensed nurses in meeting routine physical or comfort needs of
patients. For example, they obtain vital signs, assist with ambulation and personal
hygiene, and provide nourishment. PCTs also assist nursing personnel in meeting technical and interpersonal needs of patients.
Health Unit Coordinators
HUCs are responsible to the charge nurse, and provide clerical assistance for the nursing
unit. They assure that physician orders for patients are communicated to nurses, answer
telephones, perform errands, and maintain patient records.
Nurse Manager
Each clinical area has a Nurse Manager, who has 24-hour accountability for management of
nursing care and patient care delivery. The NM directs, coordinates, and evaluates the
performance and activities of nursing personnel, and is responsible to the clinical
director. The NM may have an Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM), who assists in the
administrative management of the unit.
Clinical Director
The Director comprises the upper level of nursing management for a clinical service area,
and reports to UTMB's Chief Nursing Officer.
Nurse Administrator
A nurse administrator is assigned to help provide administrative coverage after office
hours.
Physician Teams
Physician teams include a faculty member.
Residents, and Interns (first year residents), who are MDs. Medical students are also
usually assigned with each team. Specialty consultants are also often seen on the clinical
units.
Other Personnel
Other staff on the units come from a variety of service areas. These may include dietary
workers, therapists, social workers, Clinical Nurse Specialists, educators, transportation
orderlies, and housekeepers. Each employee wears a name badge that delineates
his/her name
and job title. |
