After more than five years of careful planning, design and construction, the GNL is virtually complete and the facility was formally dedicated on November 11, 2008.
This state-of-the-art facility will support an extraordinary team of scientists engaged in a vital effort to better understand – and mitigate – the threat of emerging infectious diseases.
The GNL achieved "substantial completion" in early August. In mid-September, Hurricane Ike dealt a devastating blow to Galveston Island but the GNL stood strong, weathering the storm precisely as designed.
Finishing touches and final checks are ongoing in the building's interior. Laboratory equipment and supplies are being moved into the facility. Staff and researchers are also moving into the facility.
