Ambulatory Curriculum -

The heart of the ambulatory curriculum is each resident's continuity of care clinic, which consists of one half-day clinic in all three-program years. Some of a resident's patients are followed after having been cared for on inpatient ward rotations; others are referrals.  These patients belong to the residents, and are followed by a single resident primary care provider throughout his or her training at UTMB.

In the continuity care clinics, residents will see an average of 4-6 patients per half-day clinic. There is an average of 1 supervisory faculty physician for every 4 residents in the continuity clinic. The housestaff are also supported in the clinic by resident Team Leaders for each group practice, general medicine faculty, registered nurses, a social worker, a dietician, and numerous health care technicians.

Residents in clinic with faculty

The continuity clinics are held in the University Hospital Clinics, adjacent to our training hospitals. This facility is state of the art and provides 1-2 exam rooms for each individual resident. Each room is equipped with all of the necessary medical equipment, in addition to a computer system for accessing the computerized medical record, order entry system, and online databases. We also have a large team room with multiple tables, chairs and computers for the residents to use while awaiting patients’ arrival, discussing patients with the faculty preceptors and/or completing any necessary documentation or order placement.
