Personal Overview

Dr. Kirk L. Smith is an MD/PhD graduate of UTMB who completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. In 1998, while still a student at UTMB, he helped to found Frontera de Salud, a volunteer organization of health care students and professionals committed to bringing access to care to underserved communities. In his tenure as director of the program, Frontera has been instrumental in establishing community-based health education and promotion programs in underserved communities. Dr. Smith continues to serve as Executive Director of Frontera de Salud which now includes chapters at three Texas academic healthcare centers. In 2004, he received a Physician Advocacy Fellowship from the Open Society Institute in recognition of his efforts to improve health care access for the medically underserved in south Texas.

In 2005, his experience with community-based care led to his appointment as Associate Director for Community Outreach for the Stark Diabetes Center, where he was responsible for mobilizing coalitions of local stake holders to establish community-based programs in underserved communities throughout southeast and south Texas. In 2009, he took up a position as founding director of UT Community Outreach, a state-funded diabetes prevention and control program operating community-based programs in south Texas and along the Texas Gulf Coast.
