Overview

After attending the University of Texas, Dr. Russell LaForte received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at UTMB as well.

Dr. LaForte is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has been a physician at the University Internist Group at UTMB since 1996. He was the medical director of the Wellness Continuum at UTMB, until it closed after Hurricane Ike.

His main areas of clinical interest are wellness and obesity. He enjoys leading his patients to healthier lifestyles. At present, Dr. LaForte serves as the Medical Director for the Center for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery at Victory Lakes.

Global Health

The UTMB Center for Global Health Education (CGHE) is dedicated to the training of tomorrow's global health work force to improve health for the people of Texas and around the world. The department of internal medicine is developing evidence based clinical protocols which will be available in EPIC (as order sets) for use when admitting patients with these diagnoses. Their AIM is to standardize care and decrease length of stay and readmission rates.

Currently available protocols are:

  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis Adult, ICU
  • General Medicine Admission

  • MICU/CCU Admission Order Set
  • Oral Analgesic Medicaitons
  • Parenteral Opioids
  • Sepsis, Adult ICU
