Overview
After graduating from medical school in Perú, Dr. Montes pursued postdoctoral training in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases in the United States. In 2003, Dr. Montes was the first trainee to participate in the Baylor-Cayetano Heredia Training Program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston under Dr. A. Clinton White. He studied and trained in immunology and participated in the Clinical Scientist Training Program. Dr. Montes returned to Perú in 2005 where he is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and a Research Associate at the Instituto de Medicina Tropical (IMT) Alexander von Humboldt at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. He is Director of the Immunology Laboratory and Cryobank at IMT.
Research Interests
Dr. Montes' research focuses on the immunoregulatory responses to chronic infectious diseases and retroviral co-infections. Ongoing research projects include: (1) Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) in HIV/Tuberculosis co-infected patients in Perú, (2) Immunoregulation of Human Strongyloidiasis in relation to HTLV-1 co-infection and (3) Regulatory T-cells in American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis with focus on local immune responses in infected skin and mucosa.
