The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine welcomes Dr. Rizwana Sultana as our newest faculty member. Dr. Sultana obtained her medical degree from Hamdard College of Medicine, Hamdard University, Karachi, Pakistan. She completed her pediatric residency at Texas Tech Health Science Center, El Paso and sleep medicine fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Sultana's main focus is sleep disorders in pediatric and adult patients in addition to home sleep testing. She will see adult patients at two locations: UHC Galveston campus and Victory Lakes Town Center, League City. Pediatric patients will be seen at the Pediatric Specialty Center at Bay Colony, League City.

The Division of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine welcomes Special Guest Middleton Lecturer, Professor Allan R Glanville MBBS, MD, FRACP Medical Director Lung Transplantation Director Thoracic Medicine.

Dr. Glanville presented “Lung Transplantation Through the Looking Glass: A 30 Year View” on Thursday, May 21st. Also on Thursday he presented Grand Rounds, “Medical Drivers: The Ghost in the Machine.”

The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, in collaboration with the Health System, was designated as a COPD Center of Excellence by JCAHO. This is the first such Center designation in the state of Texas. Congratulations to Dr. Sharma and the Division for their excellent work.

Gould, Senior Research Scientist, Director for Health Services Research and Implementation Science Kaiser Permanente Southern California. Dr. Gould presented "Incidental Pulmonary Nodules: Fortuitous Finding or Iatrogenic Nuisance?" on Thursday, February 26, 2015.



Dr. Shiwan Shah
The Division of Pulmonary Critical Care & Sleep Medicine welcomes Dr. Shiwan Shah as our newest faculty member. Dr. Shah obtained his medical degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine (Stratford, NJ). He completed a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency and Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship at UTMB. Shiwan was awarded the inaugural fellow of the year award in 2013. He recently completed an Interventional Pulmonary fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He brings a wealth of knowledge in advanced procedures such as rigid bronchoscopy, medical thoracoscopy, and bronchial thermoplasty. Dr. Shah's major clinical focus is advanced endoscopy for diagnosis and management of lung cancer and minimally invasive management of pleural diseases.

Congratulations to Dr. Shawn P. Nishi for her 1st Place Award on her presentation "Development of an Ultrasound-Guided Procedure Simulation" at the University of Texas Academy of Health Science Educators Innovations Conference held in February 2014. The mission of The University of Texas Kenneth I. Shine Academy of Health Science Education is to foster excellence in education in the health sciences by recognition of outstanding educators and advancement of knowledge and innovation in the field of education.

The Division has a longstanding tradition of training the next generation of pulmonary and critical care medicine physicians. We are proud of our alumni and current trainees.

Our current research focus is on improving care of critically ill patients, seamless transition of care for patients with chronic pulmonary diseases, asthma and lung cancer.
