Community Activities

AHEC. Learn what is AHEC and why would a community physician want to know about AHEC. Discover the AHEC activities in this community.  You may want to participate in some of these as part of your service learning requirement.  One half-day should be spent with an AHEC staff member.

WIC.  What is WIC and why is it important for community pediatrician to know abut WIC?  One half-day should be spent at a WIC office.

Service Learning  
Each student is expected to be involved in 2 half-days/week  (8 half-days per rotation) with a community agency serving children, youth and/or families.  Spend time volunteering your time and talents.  This could also be be evenings or weekend-time.

Submission

  1. AHEC. Describe your time with AHEC.  What did you learn about AHEC?  With what activities is AHEC involved  in this community?

  2. WIC.  Describe your visit to WIC.  What is WIC? and for what services would you send patients to WIC?

  3. A Pediatric Issue:  Identify a pediatric healthcare issue affecting this community and identify how healthcare providers are, or could be, responding to this issue outside their clinical practice. 

  4. Community Agencies serving children, youth and families. Choose one agency in this community which serves children, youth and/or families.

  1. What is the mission of this agency?  (in your own words - do not cut and paste something from a website)

  2. How is it funded?  

  3. What do agency members see as the greatest challenges to this agency?  What long-range plans or dreams do they have?

  4. How can healthcare providers be involved in this agency’s mission?

  5. Personal Learning and Reflection:  Describe what you did for this agency; and reflect on what you learned (about the agency, the community, about children and families, and most importantly, about yourself).
