Ambulatory Community Selective:
Pediatric Option

Requirements and Schedule:

Pedi ACS requires 20 full days.  The daily schedule must be negotiated between the preceptor and the student. No more than one half-day per week can be scheduled  for reading, studying, or completion of assignments. Saturday or evening work can be substituted for a weekday, but only for clinical activity or community activity, not for reading-study-module work. Link here for the absence policy.

Suggestion and Request:  take photos of yourself at your community site, with your preceptor, or at your service-learning activity with children.  We'll add them to our website.

Clinical Activities with the community preceptor

  • 50-75 %  time in patient care activities in an outpatient setting
(i.e. after you take out the required days for community agencies and practice manager - see below-- this comes to at least
20-26  half-days per rotation - most students will want to do slightly more).

  • Negotiate about hospital rounds, medical staff meetings, civic activities

  • Submit to the community preceptor at least two clinic notes per half-day session.  The student should expect feedback on some, but not all, of these notes.

  • Learn about the life of your community preceptor and complete Module 1.

  • Identify one patient encounter significant to your learning and Complete Module 3 (see below)

Healthcare Systems Learning  (Systems-Based Practice):
Complete
Module 2 (see below).  For this activity, it will be important to schedule 1-2 half-days per rotation to work with the practice manager and nursing staff.

Community Activities (see Module 4 below)
Each student is expected to engage with at least community agencies serving children, youth and/or families.

  • AHEC.  one half-day per rotation should be spent with an AHEC staff member, learning about AHEC .   The AHEC coordinators are the ones who arrange for the student's pairing with the community preceptor.  AHEC is also involved in a variety of community activities, which may be available to you for your service learning requirement  (read on).

  • WIC.  one half-day per rotation should be spent at a WIC office

    • for students working in Galveston County, it is necessary to register as a volunteer with the Galveston County Health District before visiting a WIC office.  Follow this link to learn the required steps for volunteering:
      to volunteer with GCHD.

    • for students in other communities, your community pediatrician and/or your AHEC coordinator should be able to connect you with WIC in this community.

  • Service Learning.   Two half-days per week (8 half-days per rotation) are to be spent in reflective volunteering with one or more agency:

Pre-rotation Recommendations.
Prior to arriving in the community, the student should take these steps:

  1. In the two weeks before....   consider what type of volunteer service you are interested in pursuing?  Some agencies require volunteer registration and background checks. If you can take care of this before you arrive at the clinic the first day, you have more time to volunteer.  If you cannot take are of this beforehand, make plans to do so the fist day of the rotation.

Are you interested in services to underserved? where can you volunteer to pursue that interest?  Are you interested in services to abused?  or homeless?  do you want to volunteer in a school?  with very young children?  or older?  health education?  career guidance? faculty in-service?   Do you know what after-school opportunities exist in this community?
are there an youth who need basic first-aid training?

  1. Week Before:  Contact the practice to confirm you are coming and determine the expected arrival time on the first Monday.

  2. Week Before:  Make an effort to communicate with the AHEC representative to schedule a half-day visit during your time in the community.   The AHEC representative may be helpful in helping you identify community agencies which match your interests and passions.
