Administrative Component of Compensation for Academic Administrators

Audience

The information in this document is for use by all academic administrators (e.g., department chairs, center and institute directors, and deans, including assistant and associate deans).

Policy

Letters of offer and memoranda of appointment (MOA) for university faculty whose primary responsibility is as an academic administrator shall reflect a significant administrative component of total compensation.

When faculty who are appointed to such academic administrative positions cease to serve in these capacities, they shall no longer receive the administrative percentage, and their total compensation will be reduced consistent with this policy.

Guidelines

The magnitude of this administrative component shall be established at the time of appointment, and shall be linked to specific administrative duties and responsibilities to be outlined in the letter of offer. In general, this component shall be no less than a fixed percentage established by the dean of the school in which the academic administrator has responsibility, but may be a greater fraction of total compensation depending on specific circumstances.

For those academic administrators who currently (December 1999) have established agreements regarding the percentage of compensation related to their administrative responsibilities, those shall remain. For those without a current arrangement, each academic administrator will be notified of the percentage of compensation to be associated with their administrative responsibilities by the dean of the school in which the academic administrator has responsibility.
