Retirement and Modified Service

Audience

The information in this document is for use by all faculty and administrative & professional employees.

Policy

UTMB will not require any of its employees to retire because of age, except as permitted by law.

The President of UTMB may appoint a person who has retired to modified service. Retirement is defined as withdrawal from employment with The University of Texas System or a component institution with a retirement benefit.

Guidelines for Appointment to Modifed Service

Appointment to modified service shall be made only if the President finds the service of the individual is in the best interest of UTMB.

Appointment to modified service shall be without tenure, and for not more than one academic year. Appointments for Teacher Retirement System participants will be made in compliance with applicable law. The notice provisions of the Regents’ Rules, Part One, Chapter III, Section 6.7 shall not apply to nonrenewal of such appointments. If the President of UTMB determines that it is in the best interest of UTMB, it may offer reappointment to modified service.
