Policy
|
Faculty development leaves for faculty members may be granted by the Board of Regents to a faculty member for study, research, writing, field observations, or other suitable purpose, if it finds that he or she is eligible by reason of service, that the purpose for which he or she seeks a faculty development leave is one for which a faculty development leave may be granted, and that the granting of leave to the faculty member will not place a greater number of faculty members on faculty development leave than that authorized. The law provides that after two consecutive academic years at the same institution faculty members as defined in this Act may be considered for a faculty development leave for one academic year at one-half his or her regular salary or for one-half academic year at his or her full regular salary. Such leaves shall be rated pursuant to procedures outlined in the Act and to the limitations therein.
Not more than six percent (6%) of the faculty members may be on faculty development leave at any one time.

Procedure
|
Faculty development leave must be requested by letter from the faculty member to a committee elected by the general faculty and that committee will make a recommendation to the President, who will then make recommendations to the Board of Regents. The letter for faculty development leave should include:
• Dates proposed for or leave.
• Sources of funds for salary while the Faculty member is on Faculty Development Leave.
• Description of the individual's planned activities.
• Explanation of the benefits expected to accrue to UTMB by individual's participation in the reassignment or leave of absence.

Compensation
|
A faculty member on faculty development leave may accept a grant for study, research, or travel from any institution of higher education, from a charitable, religious, or education corporation or foundation, from any business enterprise, or from any federal, state, or local government agency. An accounting of all grants shall be made to the governing board of the institution by the faculty member. A faculty member on faculty development leave may not accept employment from any other person, corporation, or government, unless the governing board determines that it would be in the public interest to do so and expressly approves the employment.
