Student Organizations

There are over 70 active student organizations here at UTMB. Most are professional- and discipline-specific. Others are cultural, religious, social, or special interest. Each year these organizations continue UTMB’s tradition of service, civic engagement, and cultural opportunities by organizing hundreds of projects for the campus and the Galveston community.

This involvement helps develop essential life skills, critical thinking, leadership, lifelong learning, and oral and written communication skills. Through additional participation in University related activities, you will discover multicultural and global perspectives, civic and individual responsibility, respect for individuals, a sense of competence, and the capacity to work well with others.

RISK MANAGEMENT AND REGISTRATION
The 2013-2014 student organization registration campaign period will take place from July 1st – August 2nd. All student organizations must fill out a registration renewal packet (attached) and attend a risk management session to be registered for the 2013-2014 school year. An officer in your group must attend one of the four risk management sessions and all paperwork must be turned in by August 2nd at 5 pm.

Updating Your Organization’s Information
A “Student Organization Registration Renewal” packet is required and must be completed each year. This form includes: any new officer changes, a solicitation disclosure (any solicitation, fundraising or sales conducted since the previous July), and a previously authorized representative or advisor’s signature.

Risk Management and Student Organization Orientation
Student organization orientation and risk management sessions are one-hour events held at the beginning of each semester. Since these events are a requirement for registered organizations, more than one session will occur. The 2013-2014 Risk Management sessions are scheduled from noon – 1:00 p.m. in the Senate room of the student center on these dates: Tuesday, July 9th; Thursday, July 11th; Thursday, July 25th; Tuesday, July 30th. These will be the only Risk Management sessions held for the Fall semester. One-on-one risk management session will not be conducted  throughout the semester unless the organization has special circumstances (i.e. Austin-based organizations, brand new organizations). At least one officer from each organization planning to register for the year must attend ONE of the risk management sessions (the officer attending may be an officer of multiple organizations). This organization representative is not only responsible for informing the rest of the members of all information discussed, but for also passing along this information on to any officers who are elected throughout the year. The organization will only get credit for attending the event if the officer is in attendance for the entire session and signs-in at the beginning of the session. If an organization’s officers were unable to attend the sessions in the fall, the organization may not register until the following semester after attending a risk management session in January. Any new officers elected for the spring are encouraged to attend this event. If an organization is not fully registered at any point in the academic year, that organization may not be given the benefits of a registered student organization, including Student Government Association funding, hosting events, posting fliers, or reserving rooms for meetings on campus.

Please rsvp to Leanne Hoge (lehoge@utmb.edu) for the risk management session you plan to attend.
