Surgery - Surgical Critical Care

The University of Texas Medical Branch has received accreditation from the Residency Review Committee of the ACGME to conduct a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship leading to American Board of Surgery eligibility. Training is done in conjunction with the Shriner's Hospital for Children-Galveston Burn Unit, emphasizing current concepts in the management of the critically ill patient. The program exposes surgical residents at the PG4 level and above to a wide variety of pathology, including burns, trauma, pulmonary dysfunction, renal failure, and nutritional support. Teaching responsibilities of the fellows include monthly lecture presentations directed at junior house staff and medical students. Didactic lectures given by recognized experts in their field cover an extensive review of theory and practice in preparation for the Critical Care boards as well as training future leaders in surgical research and eduction.

Eligibility Criteria
Each fellow must successfully complete an ACGME-accredited specialty program and/or meet other eligibility criteria as specified by the Review Committee. The program must document that each fellow has met the eligibility criteria.

1. Completion of at least three clinical years in an ACGME-accredited graduate educational program in the disciplines of general surgery, neurosurgery, urology, or obstetrics and gynecology is a prerequisite for admission to the program.
