Projects
Although the rotations conducted by the resident will provide him or
her with an overview of departmental operations, other activities are
important to building a broader understanding of hospital operations.
Therefore, in addition to departmental rotations, it is recommended that
the administrative resident will participate in the following activities:
-
Participate in capital and operational budget hearings, interacting
and obtaining the perspectives of the executive staff, department
heads, and the Healthcare Financial Management office
- Attend medical staff meetings (to include quarterly meetings,
Quality Assurance meetings, and other specific committee meetings in
which the resident may have an interest)
- Meet with the Chief of Staff to discuss medical staff issues
- Attend
Houston-area conferences (e.g. ACHE
functions) as well as state or national conferences
- Become familiar with basic outpatient satellite clinic activities
- Observe medical and surgical procedures
- Participate in JCAHO preparation activities if a survey occurs that
year; otherwise, discuss the findings of the last survey, Joint
Commission requirements and pre-survey preparations with
Administrators and department managers
- When appropriate, assume administrative responsibility for a
hospital department(s) and/or other administrative functions (e.g.
database maintenance, project management)
- Assume the role of Administrator On Call.
In addition, the resident seeks (with the
preceptor's guidance) substantive projects that are the sole
responsibility of the resident. The preceptor will assure that project
work assigned to the resident can be used in fulfillment of any academic
papers required by the resident's graduate institution.
