Dr. Karen A. Brykczynski is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing. She came to UTMB in 1986. Her BSN and MSN are from Adelphi University in New York. Her Postmaster’s Family Nurse Practitioner certificate is from the University of Colorado Health Science Center. Her Doctorate in Nursing Science is in Family Health Care Nursing from the University of California San Francisco. She teaches primarily in the Master’s Program in the School of Nursing in the graduate nurse practitioner programs and is an associate faculty member of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. As a Bennerian interpretive phenomenologist, Dr. Brykczynski’s focus is articulating the knowledge embedded in both clinical and teaching practices. Teaching innovations of particular interest to her include incorporating content from the humanities into clinical courses; using narrative pedagogy in theory and research courses; adapting courses for online teaching/learning; and developing practical assignments to clarify broad conceptual ideas. Dr. Brykczynski has served on the Faculty Senate, the GSBS Committee on Diversity, and the Internal Review Board (IRB). She maintains membership in a number of national professional organizations, including: the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, and Sigma Theta Tau International. Her regional and local organizational memberships are in the Texas Nurse Practitioners, the Galveston Coalition of Advanced Practice Nurses and the Southern Nursing Research Society. Dr. Brykczynski has received several honors. She was selected for the UCSF School of Nursing Centennial Wall of Fame in recognition of her textbook chapters used in nursing education nationally. She is as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She was a Margaret Hart Distinguished Visitor at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Nursing,Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She was honored as Outstanding Nurse Practitioner Educator by NONPF.
