Neuroscience and Cell Biology

Dr. Lewis is a professor in the Department of Neuroscience and cell biology. Currently he is the director/co-director of five courses. In the graduate school they are: BBSC cell biology core course, a BBSC elective (membrane transport processes), and a Cellular Physiology and Molecular Biophysics course titled Imaging in Biology. In the medical school they are the second year Gastrointestinal nutrition course and the fourth year Basic Science and Humanities Selective. In addition to directing the above courses, he also gives lectures in other medical and graduate school course and is the Chair and Director of the Medical School Honors Research Program. This is a non-credit program that allows a medical student an in-depth research experience. At UTMB, Dr. Lewis was director of the Cellular Physiology and Molecular Biophysics graduate program from 1999 to 2002, Vice Chair of the department from 1998 to 2003 and Acting Chair in 2002. Dr. Lewis has been active outside of UTMB. He was a William Evans Visiting Professor at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. As a member of the American Physiological Society, Dr. Lewis served as the Chair of the Cell and Molecular Physiology Programming Committee and as the Section’s representative to the Joint Programming Committee 1998-2001, and he served as Chair of the Cell and molecular Physiology Section from 2004 to 2007. He served on the APS Awards Committee from 2002 to 2006. He is a member of the editorial board of American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology, an editor of the journal Respiration and Neurobiology and reviewed numerous articles for other journals including Nature, Science, Biophysical Journal, Cell and Journal of Clinical Investigation. He has also served on a number of NIH study sections and strategic planning meetings. He has trained graduate students and post-doctoral fellows who have gone on to successful academic careers both in the United States and internationally.
