Elnora (Nonie) Mendias, Ph.D., R.N. (2007)
Associate Professor (School of Nursing)

Dr. Elnora (Nonie) P. Mendias is an Associate Professor at UTMB School of Nursing. A UTMB faculty member since 1992, she teaches baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral nursing students. Dr. Mendias has a BS in Nursing (Texas Woman's University[TWU]), an MS in Community Health Nursing with a specialty as a Family Nurse Clinician (TWU), and a PhD in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing). She is nationally certified as a family nurse practitioner (FNP) and recognized as an Advanced Practice Nurse (Family Nurse Practitioner) by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. Dr. Mendias’ scholarly interests include health promotion with communities and vulnerable populations (such as women and children or persons living with HIV/AIDS) and bioterrorism and other public health emergency preparedness. She has presented her work in many professional publications and at numerous conferences and professional meetings. Dr. Mendias serves on the Editorial Board for two professional journals (Public Health Nursing and Family & Community Health). Among other professional services she includes abstract and manuscript review, faculty development and mentoring, and grant review activities. Her current community service includes emergency preparedness activities and working with persons living with HIV/AIDS. She enjoys activities with family and friends, reading, and gardening. Among the professional honors that Dr. Mendias treasures are induction into Sigma Theta Tau International (the international nursing honor society), appointment as the Jesse and Alicia Dunn Professor of Nursing, and several teaching excellence awards (1999, 2003, 2004, and 2006). In spring, 2007, she was inducted as an inaugural member of the UTMB Academy of Master Teachers.
