Dr. Smith received his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1971 at the University of Louisville. After postdoctoral training in reproductive endocrinology at the University of Nebraska Medical School, he joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UTMB in 1975 where he directed the Reproductive Biology Laboratory. Since 1994, he has been assistant director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship. He was appointed a co-director of the Essentials of Endocrinology and Reproduction Course (EER) in 1998. He has developed several educational programs on CD-ROM for the second year medical students in the EER course including “Endocrinology of Pregnancy”, “A Hormone Adventure”, and “The Menstrual Cycle”. Other innovations for the course include web-based crossword puzzles and the “Endocrine Challenge”, which is a team-based game used for reviewing the EER course material. In 2008, he was a co-author on a new CD-ROM developed for training of first year residents in ultrasonography. He has helped to develop modules for team learning modules on reproduction and menopause in the Obstetrics and Gynecology clerkship. Dr. Smith has enjoyed high ratings from students in problem-based learning courses during the first two years of medical school.
