William J. Calhoun, MD, is the Sealy and Smith Distinguished Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch, and Vice Chair for Research at UTMB, where he is on the active medical staff.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree with High Honors in chemistry at the University of Delaware, Dr. Calhoun earned his medical degree at Hershey Medical Center at Pennsylvania State University. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Hershey Medical Center, a pulmonary medicine fellowship at the University of Vermont, and an allergy and immunology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin. He served as Associate Professor of Medicine with Tenure, and Director of the Asthma, Allergy, and Airway Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh for 13 years.
Dr. Calhoun is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, and allergy and clinical immunology. His major research interests include the role of airway inflammation, viral mechanisms, and cytokine networking in asthma, which have been funded by the National Institutes of Health; in addition, he studies novel therapeutics and their mechanisms in asthma control. His current funding from the NIH includes the Asthma Clinical Research Network (ACRN) and Severe Asthma Research Program (SARP). He is a fellow of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology, the American College of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology, the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Physicians. In addition, he is a member of several professional and scientific societies, including the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology, the American College of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology, and the American Federation for Medical Research. In addition to serving as a scientific reviewer for such journals as Chest, , the American Review of Respiratory Disease, the New England Journal of Medicine, and Lung, Dr. Calhoun is a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. Past honors include a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Clinical Investigator Award and an American Lung Association Career Investigator Award. He has served as a member and chair on several NIH Study Sections. In addition, Dr. Calhoun is the author or coauthor of more than 75 peer reviewed scientific articles, in addition to reviews, conference and symposia proceedings, monographs, books, book chapters, and numerous abstracts.
