CALL FOR NOMINATION: The John P. McGovern Student Awards in Oslerian Medicine

The McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine is pleased to announce the John P. McGovern Student Awards in Oslerian Medicine. These awards provide monetary support for the education of medical students whose performance and conduct exemplify those ideals of medical practice as promulgated by Sir William Osler. The fundamental principles of Oslerian medicine include:

  1. 1. Compassionate, personalized medical care that emphasizes the doctor/patient relationship
  2. 2. Incorporation of a sound scientific basis for optimal patient care
  3. 3. Professional behavior at all times

Each award will be for $10,000 per year and will continue until the expected date of graduation, however if an awardee is a MD/PhD student, funding will cease after three consecutive years of disbursement or until graduation, whichever comes first. In 2010, awards will be presented to seven students: two rising sophomores and five entering the second, third, or fourth years that are in good standing in the UTMB School of Medicine (SOM).

Nominations may be submitted by any of the faculty in the UTMB School of Medicine or by any UTMB medical student. Medical students may nominate themselves. Letters of nomination should be addressed to the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine and should be sent to Ms. Rosemary Lindley, Program Manager, John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine, 301 University Boulevard, Galveston, Texas 77555-0162 (campus mail: Route 0162). Letters of nomination must be in the form of a hard copy and must be received by Ms. Lindley no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, December 11, 2009.

Students whose nominations have been accepted will receive by 5:00 p.m., Friday, December 18, 2009 an invitation to apply for the award and an application form. The applicant will need to request letters of recommendation from one of his or her POM faculty members, from another member of the SOM faculty who knows the applicant, and from a medical student well acquainted with the applicant. An optional fourth letter of recommendation may be submitted by any other person who knows the applicant well. (Current Osler scholar faculty are excluded from writing letters of recommendation for nominees unless the Osler Scholar is the student’s sole POM facilitator.)

Letters of recommendation may be submitted in hard copy to the address above or electronically as a Word document to rmlindle@utmb.edu. The completed application and all letters of recommendation must be received by Ms. Lindley no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 5, 2010.
