Infectious Diseases: Translating Medical Discoveries into Medical Practice

Infectious Diseases: Translating Medical Discoveries into Medical Practice

Regardless of its source—natural or manmade—the threat from infectious diseases is real. Collectively, these illnesses take 20 million lives a year worldwide and remain a leading killer in the United States.

UTMB is not new to this field of research. Our founders cared for victims of yellow fever and influenza, while our present-day experts are addressing health concerns such as SARS, AIDS, mad cow disease, avian flu, (are we studying these?) malaria, hepatitis C, hemorrhagic fevers, West Nile disease, anthrax and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Our unparalleled depth and breadth of knowledge, combined with our state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, uniquely position UTMB to make tremendous strides in the fight to save lives, communities and nations from microbial killers.

While government funding plays a vital role in waging the war on microbes, it is the philanthropic support that will ensure victory. Your contribution to help conquer infectious diseases can establish endowments to attract and retain the brightest minds in the field and give them the seed money necessary to explore new avenues of research; something no federal grant can do. Your support can create training programs to broaden the base of knowledge in communities throughout Texas. And by augmenting government funding, your support can take excellence in the field of biomedical research to new heights.
