Telehealth: Breaking Down Barriers to Care

Telehealth: Breaking Down Barriers to Care

For more than a century, UTMB has served as a vital “safety net” for patients whose needs are great but whose resources are limited. With a growing number of medically underserved patients in Texas and beyond, this proud legacy is as relevant today as ever.

The teleheath system was pioneered by UTMB as part of a contract to care for Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) inmates and is seen as a model for other states. As this technology has evolved, we have expanded its use to provide high-quality, cost-effective care to senior citizens in rural Texas, chronically ill and disabled children in East Texas and even workers at research stations at the South Pole.

The advent of distance education technology has allowed practitioners in remote areas to access continuing education offerings that, geographically, might otherwise be unavailable to them. UTMB’s renowned Electronic Health Network has delivered care to the more than 35 Regional Maternal and Child Health clinics in East and Southesast Texas.

By integrating these innovations into our efforts to eliminate disparities, we envision a day when every Texan has a high-quality medical “home,” regardless of his or her location or circumstance.

Your gift to telehealth will make it possible for us to increase access to health care services by bringing this technology to new communities and patient populations. It can help fund a new hospital that will not only expand our ability to provide care, but create a more patient-friendly, healing environment. And it will give faculty the means to develop new methods for delivering care to patients in need. Your support will change the health care landscape in Texas for the better and help set the standard for others to follow.
