As the state’s first academic health center, the University of Texas Medical Branch has been fortunate over its long history to have helped shape the careers of some of the nation’s preeminent caregivers and scientists. These men and women are not only part of UTMB lore, they are an important part of the university’s legacy.

Our inaugural Legends in Medicine are distinguished by their efforts to set new standards of excellence for the practice of medicine, to create new models for delivering health services and to improve access to care for millions of Americans. By never settling for the status quo, they have opened our eyes to new possibilities. They have personally touched the lives of countless patients and, through a shared spirit of innovation and determination, they have transformed the health care landscape in our state and nation.
