HIPAA Project at UTMB

UTMB has taken a proactive stance in developing its HIPAA initiative. Last fall, Ernst & Young developed a campus-wide departmental gap analysis, identifying potential gaps in HIPAA compliance. Building upon that initial analysis, the Privacy Office has monitored the development of state and federal privacy law pertaining to HIPAA, developed polices to address the gap analysis and is in the process of implementing a multiphase HIPAA compliance plan.

As part of its comprehensive plan, the Privacy Office has created an Assessment Tool whereby departments will be able to track HIPAA compliance from Fall 2002 through Spring 2003. The Privacy Office has a timeline for HIPAA implementation, and expects for UTMB to be in full compliance before the deadline of April 14, 2003.

This fall, the Privacy Office will conduct campus-wide educational seminars, and will provide mandatory on-line HIPAA compliance training for all UTMB personnel.
