health and safety. All UTMB employees should perform
their duties in compliance with all applicable institutional policies;
federal, state, and local laws; and standards relating to the
environment and protection of worker health and safety. You should
become familiar with and understand how these laws, standards,
and policies apply to your specific job responsibilities. Seek
advice from your supervisor or the UTMB Safety Officer, as needed.
Each employee is responsible for advising the employee’s supervisor
or the UTMB Safety Officer of any serious workplace injury or
any situation presenting a danger of injury so that timely corrective
action may be taken. Supervisors must report unsafe practices
or conditions to the General Safety Committee or to UTMB Health
and Safety Services at (409) 772-4191. Remember, safety is ultimately
the responsibility of every UTMB employee. Information pertaining
to the Regents’ Rules may be located via the Internet at http://www.utsystem.edu/systempolicies/environ2.htm.

Q |
An
employee that I supervise is cut on the job, but the employee
refuses to seek medical treatment or complete the necessary
forms to report an on-the-job injury. One week later, the
cut becomes infected and now the employee wants to report
the injury. What do I do? |
A |
The supervisor
should write a letter to the WCI office detailing the incident
and the employee’s refusal to get treatment or complete
the proper forms. If the employee later seeks medical treatment,
he/she should report the injury to the WCI office, complete
the necessary WCI form, and seek medical attention. |
Q |
I
am shipping chemicals to another university. Can I put everything
in one box? |
A |
No.
You should contact UTMB Health and Safety Services at (409)
772-4191 for help in preparing the items for shipping. Failure
to ship these chemicals correctly may violate numerous federal
and state laws. |
Q |
I
am planning to purchase, or have already installed, a new
chemical fume hood or biological safety cabinet in my lab.
What types of certification are required for this equipment? |
A |
You should
contact Health and Safety Services/Biological and Chemical
Safety at (409) 772-1781 before purchasing this type of
equipment. If you have already purchased or installed such
new equipment, you should contact Biological and Chemical
Safety to make arrangements for certification and inspection
services to ensure proper operation of the equipment. |
Q |
I accidentally
smashed my finger in the office door. I will probably lose
a fingernail because of the injury. Should I report this
to the Worker’s Compensation office? |
A |
Yes. You should
report your injury to both your supervisor and the Worker’s
Compensation Insurance (WCI) Office, (409) 772-1892. Also,
you must complete Part I, Employee’s Injury Statement, of
the Worker’s Compensation Insurance form. Your supervisor
should provide you with the WCI form. However, if your supervisor
or department does not have the WCI form, you can get the
form from the WCI office. |
