Aug 7: Rose Garden driveway reopening delayed
This week’s inclement weather has caused a two-day delay in the completion of construction activities around the east side of Levin Hall. The Rose Garden driveway was closed to through traffic from the Moody Medical Library loading dock on Aug. 2. The driveway will now reopen on Aug. 12, along with access to the first floor of Levin Hall on the north side of the building, which was closed previously for concrete removal and replacement.

Aug 1: Weekend construction forces closure to portion of Rose Garden driveway
Weekend construction will force the closure of a portion of the Rose Garden driveway at 10th and Market Streets until Friday, August 8. The driveway will remain open up to the Moody Library loading dock. The Rose Garden driveway will reopen to “through traffic” on Aug. 8 along with access to the first floor of Levin Hall on the north side of the building, which was recently blocked for concrete removal and replacement.

July 31: Walkway between Basic Science Building and Levin Hall reopens; easier access to north side of campus
Effective July 31, the construction fence that was relocated near Basic Science Building (BSB) just over a week ago will be moved back to its original location south of BSB, reopening the walkway to the north side of the campus between the Galveston National Lab (GNL) and the BSB from 11th Street.  East-to-west pedestrian access on the south side of the BSB will be available along the main east-west concourse, providing access to the library and west entrance of Children’s Hospital. Trees are currently being planted and other landscaping is being completed along the south side of the GNL site. A newly constructed and permanent ADA ramp will be open at the northwest corner of the library plaza and the south side of the GNL. Shortly after July 31, the wooden access ramp at the west side of the library will be dismantled for subsurface work at that location. The fenced construction site will be closed off for approximately six weeks. The north ground floor entrance to Levin Hall will also be blocked for several days while the existing concrete is removed and replaced. Access to Levin Hall will be via the south entrance along Market Street. In addition, the existing pea gravel just east of Levin Hall will be removed on Aug. 2. Access to the first floor of Levin Hall on the north side of the building will reopen on Aug. 8.

July 18: Pedestrian detour at GNL site; UHC south-side entrance doors to reopen on July 21
Beginning Monday, July 21, fencing will be moved back to the Basic Science Building, cutting off access to the north side of the campus between Levin Hall and the BSB. Pedestrians will be able to access the BSB via the Medical Research Building or by walking around to the east entrances between the BSB and the GNL. The south campus egress through this same area will not be affected and will remain open down to the rose garden. Movement south between the Medical Research Building, Basic Science and Levin Hall will not change. This detour is expected to last one week, with walkways reopening on Monday, July 28, along with the recently completed concourse south of the GNL, moving east to west. Also on July 21, the UHC south-side doors will reopen at 7 a.m. The curtain wall at the Clinical Sciences Building and Children’s Hospital will remain in place until August 21, 2008.

July 8: UPDATE: “White Hallway” elevators #2, #3 and #4 closed for new phase of construction,   6 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday
Construction continues in the “white hallway” connecting John Sealy Hospital with John Sealy Annex.  Elevators #2, #3 and # 4 will be out of use from 6 p.m. Thursday, July 10 through 9 a.m. Friday, July 11, to accommodate the construction. The section of the “white hallway” that was closed on July 7, about one-third of the hallway at the south end nearest the main hospital entrance, will remain closed for approximately three to four weeks as the renovations continue.

Much of the work will be conducted after-hours to reduce noise and traffic. Detour signs with alternate routes have been posted; a graphic shows the area being improved. After this project is complete, work will shift to the north end of the corridor. Watch for additional details. These renovations are part of environmental enhancements that include the recent work in and around Children ’s Hospital, the adjacent garden, the hallways and plaza, all designed to make our facilities more inviting and attractive to patients, visitors, students and employees. We apologize for any temporary inconvenience these improvements may cause. For questions, please contact Raymond “Sonny” Morales at ramorale@utmb.edu

May 27: Temporary ramp being built at library as part of central campus landscape project
Construction continues in the area around the GNL and Moody Medical Library. The construction fence has been moved closer to the library, and work has begun on a temporary ramp to provide access to the library. See an illustration of the fence relocation here. Below, a crew works on a new ramp to the west of the library, facing Levin Hall.

May 16: West corridor in John Sealy Annex to close Monday for painting
The John Sealy Annex corridor that connects Children’s Hospital with the McCullough Building (in the building also known as “Old Children’s") will close Monday, May 19, for painting and renovation. Volunteer Services and Patient Services are in the area; the project is expected to last about one week. This project is being completed in preparation for major renovation of the main white hallway, located to the east of this corridor. That project is scheduled for later this year.

May 7: Clinical Sciences Building doors reopen
The west doors to the Clinical Sciences Building have reopened. They were closed as part of the landscape work on the west side of campus.

April 23: New route open, Clinical Sciences doors to close Saturday
The West Campus Landscape project continues on schedule. A busy pedestrian route that had been closed has now opened--the north-south pathway between the Keiller and Basic Science buildings is once again safe for travel. It opened Wednesday. Work is now shifting to the east side of Keiller and the GNL, closer to the hospital complex. On Saturday morning, April 26, the west-facing doors to the Clinical Sciences Building will close for safety and dust control; they will be closed for approximately two weeks, through around May 12. Watch for signage posted throughout the area for detours and directions, and please exercise caution. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

March 5, 2008: Work shifts to new phase in West Campus Project; Basic Science Building entrance affected
Work will begin Monday, March 10, on the next phase of the West Campus Landscape project. This transition will mean a shift in pedestrian traffic as the area around the fountain on The Strand reopens and the area between the Basic Science Building and the GNL closes. This closing will block access to the east/ground floor entry to the Basic Science Building six weeks.

Employees needing to access the Basic Sciences Building should use the south set of stairs and gain access on the first floor of the building. New card readers have been added to this entryway and those with card access to the ground floor doors have access to the first-floor entrance.

ADA accessibility will temporarily be through the loading dock on the north side of the Basic Science Building during this phase of construction, and EMS access has been coordinated through the city to be permanently available at the loading dock. The north-south passage along the Clinical Science Building, east of the GNL, will remain open during this project to ease traffic across that side of campus. Watch for directional signage for pedestrian detours.

Dec. 19, 2007: West campus-area sidewalk closure planned during holidays
Pedestrian access to the sidewalk near the Jamail Student Center--north of the circle drive on The Strand--will be temporarily closed beginning Dec. 26 for work associated with the West Campus Landscape Project. The closure has been scheduled at a time expected to cause minimal disruption and inconvenience for pedestrians. The sidewalk should reopen within two days. Thank you for your patience as improvements continue to be made to the UTMB campus.

Dec. 3, 2007: Changes ahead with next phase of West Campus Landscape Project
The next phase of the West Campus Landscape Project has begun at the Wortham Fountain on Strand, and with it comes a new round of openings and closures. The construction area west of Children’s Hospital, east of the Moody Library, north of the 9th Street drop off, as well as the north-south walkway between Children’s and Clinical Sciences Building will open on Monday, Dec. 3.

The west entrance to Children’s Hospital remains closed as interior renovations from another project continue.  A previously closed area between Keiller, Galveston National Laboratory, Graves, and Basic Sciences Building is under construction around the existing fountain on Strand. This area is expected to be reopened in February 2008, when the area south of it, between the Basic Sciences Building and the Galveston National Laboratory will close. As part of the closure of the east ground level entrance to Basic Sciences Building (BSB), an alternate pedestrian and handicap accessible route will be temporarily established.  That route could be established in January in advance of the shutdown of the east ground level entrance to BSB.
