Ninth Street Employee Drop-off

Project at a Glance

Project Objective: Enhanced employee access

Start Date: Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005

Anticipated Completion*: Mid-May, 2005

Construction Impact: Will include some pedestrian detours and the temporary closure of two doors. (See details below.)

One block of Market St. to close March 22 to 24
Posted March 18, 2005 A short stretch of Market St. will close this coming week for work on the curb and storm sewers near the new Ninth St. Employee Drop-off. The road will be closed between Ninth and Tenth streets, south of the Moody Medical Library, Tuesday through Thursday, March 22 to 24.  The detour will ensure the safety of vehicles, pedestrians and workers; the trolley will stop one station short of its full route during the work.

A new traffic circle is being constructed at Ninth St., just north of Market St. between Children’s Hospital and the Moody Medical Library, for use primarily by employees to enhance their access to the hospitals and clinical complex.

Construction on this project begins on Wednesday, Feb. 9 with the installation of safety fences in the area (see perimeter below). The project is expected to take approximately three months, and will include landscaping and finish work around the new trolley stop area south of Children’s Hospital, and the completion of underground utility work in the area.

Although no major or long-term disruption of traffic along Market St. is expected,  please note the following pedestrian detours:

  • The west door on the south side of Children’s Hospital (facing Shriners) will be temporarily closed during the construction; the east door on the south side will be available as an emergency exit. (The west entrance to Children’s Hospital, facing the library plaza, is open everyday 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days. After 9 p.m., access is available through the John Sealy Hospital main entrance.)
  • A portion of the sidewalk adjacent to Moody Medical Library will also close. Access will still be available to and through the library plaza, and will include a temporary ramp for wheelchair and motorized chair access.

In addition to improving access and convenience for employees, this project will also reduce peak-hour congestion at the main entrance to John Sealy Hospital, which will remain the primary pick-up and drop-off point for patients and visitors. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your support as we build a better UTMB.

* Please remember that construction timetables are subject to variables such as weather. The university and its contractors are always motivated to complete projects quickly, safely, properly and with minimal disruption. We always appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to build a better UTMB.
