Meeting Highlights
August 9, 2006
Present: Jose Gonzalez, Clifford Houston, Raymond Lewis, Freddy A.
Paniagua, Chair, Suzanne Peloquin, Jennifer Raeke, Cecilia Romero, Kathy
Shingleton, Cindy Stanton and Melvin Williams.
1. Approval of the Minutes: The July 12, 2006 minutes were approved.
2. Announcements: There were no announcements.
3. Letter to Dr. Stobo Regarding the Multicultural Teaching Scholars
Program at UTMB: Dr. Paniagua provided a copy of the letter from Dr.
Stobo regarding the Multicultural Teaching Scholars Program proposal.
Dr. Stobo has asked the Council of Deans to review the proposal and will
notify Dr. Paniagua of their recommendation.
4. Update on GAP Funding Initiative – Letter Sent to Dr. Parisi and
her Reply: Dr. Paniagua informed the committee that Dr. Parisi had
reviewed the Gap Funding initiative and letter sent by him on the
committee’s behalf and is pleased with the proposal. Dr. Parisi stated
that she would send Dr. Paniagua a letter regarding details soon.
5. Core Committees’2006 Awards: Dr. Parisi and Department of
Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences – August 17, 2006: Melvin Williams
agreed to present the two core committee awards to Dr. Parisi and the
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences during Employee Service
Day on August 17. The ceremony begins at 2:00 p.m. in the Levin Hall
Auditorium.
6. Dr. Stobo’s Remarks During Diversity Council Meeting on July 25,
2006 Regarding Combining Core Committees and Diversity Council Dr.
Paniagua discussed Dr. Stobo’s remarks during the last Council meeting
on July 25 regarding integration of the Core Committees and the
Institutional Diversity Council. It was agreed Melvin Williams as
Facilitator would convene a small group of representatives from the two
Core Committees and the Council to discuss integration of the three
groups. The task force will consist of three members from each of the
Core Committees and four members from the Council.
7. The Core Committee thanked Ms. Sheryl L. Lashway for her
outstanding support to the operation of the Core Committee during each
of the 12 committee meetings in 2005-2006.
