Core Committee for the Support of Underrepresented Ethnic Groups
Meeting Highlights
July 12, 2006

Present: Raymond Lewis, Freddy A. Paniagua, Chair, Suzanne Peloquin, Rebecca Saavedra and Melvin Williams. Guests: Georgia Leisey and Alice Speer.

1. Approval of the Minutes: The June 14, 2006 minutes were approved.

2. Announcements: There were no announcements.

3. Letter to Dr. Parisi – Gap Funding: Dr. Paniagua shared a draft letter to Dr. Parisi regarding the concept of using gap funding to recruit minority faculty that originated after Family Medicine Chair Barbara Thompson presented to the committee in 2005. The gap funding statement that Suzanne Peloquin had drafted was used to construct the letter. Dr. Speer will circulate the letter via email to the Core Committee for the Advancement of Women Faculty and Administrators for their thoughts and recommendations before the letter is finalized and presented to Dr. Parisi.

4. Diversity Week Core Committee Award: Melvin Williams shared numbers and percentages relating to diversity in our School of Medicine departments compared to the AAMC and national averages for selection of this year’s Diversity Award recipient. After reviewing the spreadsheet of numbers and percentages provided by Melvin Williams, the committee agreed to present the Outstanding Achievement Award for Recruitment and Retention of Underrepresented Ethnic Groups to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences which has the highest percentage of minority faculty, of which 50% are women. The committee also agreed to recognize Dr. Parisi for her leadership in the recruitment of minority faculty, including two African-American Chairmen in the School of Medicine. The committee agreed to present both awards at the Employee Service Day on August 17 since there will not be a Town Meeting held during Diversity Week. Melvin Williams will present the awards on behalf of the committee. The recipients will be notified of their selection. The committee will work on the appropriate wording for the award.

5. Core Committees’ Participation during Diversity Week: Dr. Freddy A. Paniagua, Chair and guest Dr. Alice Speer, Chair from the Core Committee for the Advancement of Women Faculty and Administrators will present the work of their committees over the past year during Diversity Week on Monday, July 17, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. in the Levin Hall Dining Room. Topics will include who the committees are, their core values, what they have been doing and what the data is. They will include information on the recruitment and retention of minority faculty and women at UTMB. Guest Georgia Leisey informed the committee that she would post some general information about their presentation on the UTMB announcements and iUTMB to promote their presentation.

Meeting adjourned at 1:00 p.m.

Our next meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, August 9, 2006, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Ballinger Mills Room.

Recorder: Sheryl Lashway, Office of the President
