Meeting Highlights
March 8, 2006
Present: Jose Gonzalez, Clifford Houston, Raymond Lewis, Freddy A.
Paniagua, Suzanne Peloquin, Cecilia Romero, Rebecca Saavedra, and Miguel
Ybarra.
1. Approval of the Minutes: Dr. Paniagua informed the committee that
Dr. Speer is still reviewing the minutes of February 8, 2006 meeting
regarding her presentation involving an action plan for a Faculty
Excellence Center, and that the minutes will be distributed via email
for approval.
2. Announcement: Dr. Cecilia Romero announced that she is planning to
retire from UTMB. Members of the committee thanked Dr. Romero for her
contributions to this Core committee. Dr. Romero will continue on this
committee until her term expires.
Dr. Paniagua also announced that Ms. Sheryl Lashway is on vacation
and he thanked her for the coordination of this meeting before going on
vacation.
3. Dr. Jose Gonzalez and Mr. Ray Lewis presented a draft for the
establishment of a Multicultural Teaching Scholars Program at UTMB. An
extensive discussion followed, with emphasis on issues of criteria for
the selection of scholars for this program.
Dr. Gonzalez agreed to consider all comments and suggestions and then
meet with the subcommittee to revise the draft and bring it back to the
Core Committee for further discussion.
4. Dr. Paniagua distributed the Faculty Survey-Executive Summary
dated November 9, 2005. He encouraged members to review this document
and then to contact Ms. Lashway if any member would like to include in a
future agenda a discussion of that Executive Summary that may impact the
core goals of this committee. The area of "compensation" was perceived
as a key issue that this Core committee should review in more detail
because this particular area was generally rated as "unfavorable and
varies by school and tenure." Dr. Paniagua reported that the School of
Medicine released a "Faculty Compensation Plan" that presents general
guidelines for the chairs in this school to develop their own
compensation plan. Dr. Paniagua agreed to contact Dean Parisi to get a
copy of those guidelines for further discussion of them in a future
meeting. Dr. Paniagua will also ask the other deans for a copy of their
compensation plan.
Meeting adjourned at 1:10 p.m.
Our next meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, April 12, 2006, from
12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Ballinger Mills Room.
