1. Approval of Minutes
The November 8, 2006 minutes were approved.
2. Old Business
a) Follow-up on Multicultural Teaching Scholars Program at UTMB
Dr. Gonzalez informed the committee that he had met with Dr. Ruth
Levine, Executive Director of the Academy of Masters Teachers, regarding
the Core Committee’s Multicultural Teaching Scholars Program proposal.
Dr. Levine loved the proposal and the fact that it would bring all
schools together. As development of the program progresses, Dr. Levine
would eventually like 1-2 members of the Core Committee to serve on a
task force that she would like to convene from members of the Academy to
implement this program. Dr. Gonzalez informed the Committee that Dr.
Levine would like to come address our group and that she informed him
that the application process for the Academy of Master Teachers is about
six months away.
b) Follow-up on GAP Funding Initiative
Dr Gonzalez informed the Committee that he and Raymond Lewis would be
meeting with Chris Johnsen from Legal Affairs on December 14 to develop
acceptable language for the Gap funding proposal.
3. New Business
a) Diversity Reports Dr. Gonzalez discussed the Core Committee’s
Action Plan with the group. The Committee would like to continue to meet
with the Chairs from the clinical and basic science areas and also with
the four Deans to receive feedback on minority recruitment and retention
efforts from each school. These will be scheduled on a periodic basis so
that the Committee can continue to push forward on other works in
progress. Dr. Gonzalez asked Sheryl Lashway to draft a letter to the
Deans inviting them to discuss faculty diversity/promotion in their
school with our Core Committee.
b) Announcements by members; agenda items for next meeting Dr.
Gonzalez informed the Committee that he had met with Dr. Stobo and
Jennifer to discuss the action plan for the committee for 2006-2007 as
well as any new charges he may have for the group. Dr. Stobo asked Dr.
Gonzalez to secure the following information:
• How many minority faculty have been promoted compared to other faculty
(for example: promoted from Assistant to Associate Professor, etc.)
• Were minority faculty adversely affected by UTMB's reorganization over
the summer? (faculty only, not staff)
Dr. Gonzalez informed the Committee that Patrice Yarbough, Chair of the
Core Committee for the Advancement of Women Faculty and Administrators
would be addressing the group at its meeting in February regarding their
efforts to bring a Faculty Excellence Center to UTMB. Dr. Gonzalez
informed the Committee that Jennifer Raeke had suggested that the two
Core Committees collaborate on an educational activity that addresses
equal opportunity and diversity during Diversity Week. Melvin Williams
suggested that this activity could be offered outside Diversity Week.
Dr. Gonzalez will meet with Patrice and Melvin to discuss options for
the format and timing of this joint activity.
c) Dr. Gonzalez asked Miguel Ybarra to lead a work group of Core
Committee members with the mandate to develop proposals for how to
implement the Committee’s 2006-2007 Action plans and to report its
progress to our membership at, time permitting, our January meeting.
4. Next Meeting
The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 10,
2007.
Meeting adjourned at 1:10 p.m.
