Meeting Highlights
Members present: J. Glenn, J. Gonzalez, R. Lewis, F. Paniagua, N.
Perez, R. Reyes, R. Saavedra, Robinlyn Sayers and M. Williams.
1. Approval of the Minutes
Minutes of June 13, 2007 were approved via email.
2. Old Business
a) Gap Funding Statement – Jose Gonzalez (handout provided)
Dr. Gonzalez asked the group whether they wanted to continue to move
forward with the Gap Funding Statement or lay it to rest. The Core Women
group supports the concept in principle and the COD didn’t want to
commit funding for more than a year at a time. Dr. Gonzalez has revised
the statement to reflect that change. The group stated their desire to
continue to move forward with the statement. Dr. Gonzalez, Ray Lewis,
and Robinlyn Sayers will meet with Dr. Barbara Thompson, who brought the
concept of gap funding to the group when she visited the committee in
previous years, to ask for her collaboration with department chairs.
b) Core Committee Action Plan Workgroup – S. Peloquin
Dr. Peloquin was unable to attend the meeting and will give an update
at the next meeting.
c) Diversity Reports – Melvin Williams
Melvin Williams informed the group that he has some new statistics
that he will share at a future meeting.
3. New Business
a) Scheduling Deans/Chairs to meet with Committee Update – J.
Gonzalez
Dr. Gonzalez announced that Dr. Callender would be attending the
August 8 meeting. The group should provide a list of bulleted items
critical to diversity for Dr. Callender.
b) Council/Core Committees Collaboration Update – J. Gonzalez
Melvin announced that Dr. Metzler, the Diversity Council consultant
hired by UTMB will be on campus July 25 and 26 to conduct diversity
training. A member from each Core Committee will be attending the
training.
c) Announcements by members; agenda items for next meeting
The mission statement as shown on the iUTMB website is up for
revision. The mission statement will be sent to the group for comments
and feedback regarding revision of the statement.
4. Next Meeting
The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, August 8,
2007.
