Dr. Gonzalez introduced Romar Reyes, a Respiratory Therapy faculty
member new to the Core Committee. Mr. Reyes has been with UTMB since
January 2007.
3. Old Business
a) Gap Funding Statement – Jose Gonzalez (handout provided)
For the sake of several new members, Dr. Gonzalez presented a brief
update on the gap funding statement, including presenting the statement
to both Core committees for their support and to the Institutional
Diversity Council who unanimously approved the statement at their May
meeting. Dr. Gonzalez reported that he had presented the gap funding
statement to the Council of Deans for their support and the COD didn’t
want to commit funding for more than a year at a time. Dr. Gonzalez has
revised the statement to reflect that change. The changed statement will
be re-submitted to Dean Watson as Chair of the COD.
b) Core Committee Action Plan Workgroup – S. Peloquin (handout
provided)
Dr. Peloquin updated the committee on the “Resources for New Faculty”
document prepared by her Action Plan Workgroup. Dr. Peloquin shared a
list of community resources that had been added to the document. Melvin
Williams thought the LULAC group needed to be added, the City of
Galveston Mayor’s Office was also suggested and Dr. Peloquin noted that
the community resources section was missing a list of churches. A few
additions had also been included in the Personal Resources section. The
group thought the next step after completion would be to add the
resources list to the Core Committee website and, if possible, a link to
the Human Resources website.
c) Diversity Reports – Melvin Williams (handouts provided)
Melvin Williams provided the group with some additional data on
Faculty Retention by School by Gender over the years. Both the SAHS and
the SON are below the national average; the SOM percentages are around
the national average.
4. New Business
a) Scheduling Deans/Chairs to meet with Committee Update – J.
Gonzalez
Dr. Gonzalez announced that Dr. Cary Cooper, Dean of the Graduate
School of Biomedical Sciences would be joining the group at the next
meeting on August 8 to share diversity efforts in the GSBS.
b) Council/Core Committees Collaboration Update – J. Gonzalez
Dr. Gonzalez encouraged those members who hadn’t signed up for a
Diversity Council subcommittee to do so. The Council is working on an
annual series of presentations.
c) Announcements by members; agenda items for next meeting
Melvin Williams informed the group that during the week of July 23, a
diversity consultant would be on campus.
