1. Approval of the Minutes

2. New Member

Melvin Williams is working on a replacement for the vacancy created by Miguel Ybarra’s departure.

3. Old Business

a) Diversity Reports – Melvin Williams

A comparison chart/graph was distributed by M. Williams detailing UTMB faculty retention by ethnicity over the last few years. He is working on trying to get regional and national figures for comparison. Dr. Gonzalez requested that the retention data be provided by School. Mr. Williams will work on this request for the next meeting. To determine the reason for departure, Mr. Williams stressed the need for exit interviews at UTMB.

b) Gap Funding Statement – Raymond Lewis

The current version of the Gap Funding Statement was approved. Dr. Gonzalez will present it to the Core Committee for Woman for their support before presenting it to the Diversity Council and the Council of Deans.

c) Core Committee Action Plan Workgroup – S. Peloquin

Dr. Peloquin handed out a “Resources for New Faculty” handout prepared by her Action Plan Workgroup. She requested that committee members review its contents, and e-mail her with ideas and comments in order to finalize it at the April meeting. Sheryl Lashway will be asked to e-mail the handout to those members not in attendance at today’s meeting.

4. New Business

a) Dr. Pamela Watson – Dean, School of Nursing and Chief Academic Officer

Dr. Gonzalez introduced Dr. Pam Watson, Dean of the School of Nursing and Chief Academic Officer. She reported on the School of Nursing’s underrepresented faculty numbers and the various obstacles that the School has experienced over the last few years in attracting and retaining underrepresented faculty. Prolonged discussion followed on various topics, including the shortage at UTMB among nurses who hold doctorates and the various approaches being employed to attract nursing faculty from underrepresented ethnic groups.

b) Council/Core Committees Collaboration – Jose Gonzalez

The committee agreed that more visibility is needed for the Core Committees. Dr. Gonzalez reported that he, Patrice Yarbough & David Ketchens have been meeting to try to develop an approach and obtain funding for the implementation of various programs to achieve this.

c) Announcements by members; agenda items for next meeting

Dr. Houston explained to the committee that there used to be a welcoming reception at UTMB for underrepresented minority faculty and students. However, the funding for this was cut several years ago.
