Dr. Gonzalez introduced Dr. Pam Watson, Dean of the School of Nursing
and Chief Academic Officer. She reported on the School of Nursing’s
underrepresented faculty numbers and the various obstacles that the

retaining underrepresented faculty. Prolonged discussion followed on
various topics, including the shortage at UTMB among nurses who hold
doctorates and the various approaches being employed to attract nursing
faculty from underrepresented ethnic groups.
b) Council/Core Committees Collaboration – Jose Gonzalez
The committee agreed that more visibility is needed for the Core
Committees. Dr. Gonzalez reported that he, Patrice Yarbough & David
Ketchens have been meeting to try to develop an approach and obtain
funding for the implementation of various programs to achieve this.
c) Announcements by members; agenda items for next meeting
Dr. Houston explained to the committee that there used to be a
welcoming reception at UTMB for underrepresented minority faculty and
students. However, the funding for this was cut several years ago.
