1. Introduction of Members The members of the committee introduced
themselves.
2. Old Business
a) Multicultural Teaching Scholars Program at UTMB
Dr. Paniagua informed the committee of the progress achieved during
2005-2006 regarding bringing a Multicultural Teaching Scholars Program
to UTMB. A copy of the proposal was provided to the committee. The
proposal has gone to the Council of Deans for their recommendation.
b) GAP Funding Initiative
A copy of the Gap Funding statement provided by Suzanne Peloquin in
2005-2006 was provided to the committee in addition to a copy of the
letter to Dr. Parisi from Dr. Paniagua on behalf of the committee asking
her to present the concept to the Council of Deans. Dr. Paniagua
informed the committee that Dr. Parisi was pleased with the proposal at
that time and brought the committee up-to-date on where the concept for
gap funding stands.
c) Other Business
Dr. Paniagua provided the group with an overview of the work of the
Core Committee. The committee was formed by Dr. Stobo on the
recommendation of The University of Texas System to enhance diversity at
UTMB, including the recruitment and retention of underrepresented
minorities. The Core Committee also participates in a presentation
during Diversity Week held in July of each year.
The Core Committee has also been inviting various chairs from School
of Medicine departments to give a presentation of how they are working
to promote diversity in their area. Dr. Paniagua informed the committee
that they would need to think about the next chair to invite to present
and when.
Dr. Paniagua informed the committee about two awards that are
presented from this Core Committee. The Outstanding Achievement Award
for Recruitment and Retention of Underrepresented Ethnic Groups was
awarded to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences which
had the highest percentage of minority faculty, of which 50% are women.
The committee also recognized Dr. Parisi for her leadership in the
recruitment of minority faculty, including two African-American Chairmen
in the School of Medicine. The committee presented both awards at
Employee Service Day on August 17. Melvin Williams presented the awards
on behalf of the committee.
Kathy Shingleton informed the committee of efforts underway to
enhance diversity at UTMB. UTMB is working to get our students to come
back and work after they graduate. We want to mirror the populations we
serve. Kind of like gap funding, a best practice is to hire spouses when
recruiting faculty and executive leadership.
3. New Business
Dr. Stobo’s resignation from UTMB was discussed and members of the
committee would like representation on the Search Committee for the new
president. Kathy Shingleton informed the committee that the UT System
Board of Regents would conduct the interviews for UTMB’s new president.
The committee also discussed representation on the Search Committee
for the Dean of Medicine. Kathy Shingleton informed the committee that
this was strictly an internal search in the interest of time and that
two candidates would be interviewed on October 12 and 16, Dr. Garland
Anderson and Dr. Lawrence Stanberry.
Upon recommendation by Raymond Lewis, the committee agreed that they
would like for Dr. Stobo to attend a meeting and restate their charge.
4. Next Meeting
Miguel Ybarra informed the committee that he would like to have a
review of new charges for the Core Committee for 2006-2007. This would
include tracking implementation of the action plan put together by the
Core Committee in 2003. Sheryl Lashway agreed to email the action plan
to the committee along with a copy of the Institutional Diversity
Council’s Implementation Plan.
Meeting adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
Recorder: Sheryl Lashway, Office of the President
