Clinical Practice Guidelines
Critical Pathways and Primary Care Guidelines
The Clinical Practice Guidelines, Critical Pathways, and Primary Care Guidelines are meant to serve as guidelines for routine patient care.  When the condition of the patient warrants treatment decisions must be dictated by the skill and judgment of the health care professional.

The intent of this page is to facilitate the use of Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs), Critical Pathways (CPs), and Primary Care Guidelines (PCGs) in the UTMB Hospitals and Clinics and to readily provide their access to all UTMB health care providers as new guidelines are developed or existing ones are updated.

  • Clinical Practice Guidelines/Critical Pathways - Clinical Practice guidelines are nationally standardized recommendations for health care developed by a formal process that incorporates the best scientific evidence of effectiveness with expert opinion.  They are intended to specify recommendations for treatment methods regarding diagnoses and procedures.  They differ from standards in that they are not applied rigidly and followed in virtually all cases.  Practice guidelines are designed to be flexible, depending on patient needs and clinical judgment.
  • Primary Care Guidelines - Primary Care Guidelines were developed to assist the Primary Care Physician through the treatment process for patients with related diagnoses and deciding when consult is appropriate.
