Curriculum

Clinical Experiences

In addition to assisting in faculty clinics and his/her own resident continuity clinic, each resident’s experience will include the following specialty rotations:

 

First Year 

Emphasis in the first year is in working in faculty outpatient dermatology clinics at various locations as a way to build basic clinical dermatology fund of knowledge.  First year residents also participate in

-Resident continuity clinic each week
-Procedure time each week
-Cosmetic Dermatology Clinic

 

 

 

 

 

Second Year

 In the second year, residents spend several months in each of the following which are unique to the second year schedule, in addition to working in faculty clinics and having their own resident clinic and procedure time each week. 

    Mohs surgery

    Pediatric dermatology clinic

    Inpatient dermatology consults

    TDCJ Telemediine clinic

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Third Year

 

 

 

Third year residents have more autonomy in their schedules, with more frequent resident clinics and procedure time.  In addition, they also spend time specifically devoted to

TDC (Texas Department of Corrections) clinic and procedures

Electives 

                    
Third year residents may enroll in a two-week off-campus elective that will enable them to acquire skills not offered by the UTMB Dermatology Residency Program.  After completing the off-campus elective, senior residents must make a departmental presentation about their experience.

Local/National Dermatology Meetings:

Houston Dermatological Society (monthly, attended by all residents)

Texas Dermatological Society (twice yearly, attended by a first-year resident)

American Academy of Dermatology (yearly, all residents attend twice during their residency – once during 3rd year, and once during either the 1st OR 2nd year)

Pacific Dermatologic Association (yearly, attended by one 3rd-year resident)

In addition, every 3rd-year resident may attend a meeting of their choice

***Residents are encouraged to submit abstracts and/or presentations to all meetings attended.
