Is race a biological myth? Where did the idea of racial differences come
from? These and other questions will be explored in part one (The Difference
Between Us) of this award-winning PBS film series and discussed by the panel
discussion that follows. Learn how beliefs about race are actually shaped by
history, social institutions and cultural beliefs.

participants. The session is about diversity for the real world. Diversity in

Hear UTMB’s deans report on diversity among each school’s faculty and
administrative and professional (A&P) staff, and what each school is doing to
increase diversity. Human Resources chief steward Kathy Shingleton will report
on diversity statistics among A&P and classified staff in other areas of the
university. A diversity award presentation, sponsored by the Diversity Council,
will also take place.

Area health and government agency representatives come together to explore
health disparities. We examine the case of a diabetic patient seen at St.
Vincent’s Clinic to illustrate how the community can reduce barriers to health
care for the underserved. Participants will come away with enough information
about the workings of the health care system in Galveston County to be an
advocate for those in need, and their increased awareness of the public health
resources that exist in the county will enable them to educate others on
possible solutions to barriers to care.

Health Disparities Panel: Research

Session attendees will learn
more about some of the important research that is being conducted at UTMB and
regionally in the area of health disparities, and find out new ways they can
advance their own research in this important area. The future implications of
health disparities research will also be discussed.
Panelists include:
Dr. Kyriakos Markides, Professor and Director, Division of
Sociomedical Sciences; and the Annie and John Gnitzinger Professor of Aging
Studies; UTMB. Markides will talk about his 10-year study on aging Hispanic
population in San Antonio and the work of the Center for Population Health and
Health Disparities in describing how culture influences health.
Dr. Martha Hargraves, Associate Professor, Department of Obstetrics
and Gynecology; Director, Health Policy and Health Services Research Division,
UTMB. Hargraves will report on her Galveston-based research study on a
“Faith-Based Approach to African American Health through Nutrition and
Exercise.”
Dr. Lovell Jones, Director, Center for Minority Health, M. D. Anderson
Cancer Center; Professor, Department of Gynecologic Oncology and Department of
Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; Faculty,
Graduate School for Biomedical Sciences, University of Texas Health Science
Center at Houston. Jones will describe the Health Disparities Consortium that is
part of the Center for Minority Health at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the
research that is being developed there, including the first comprehensive health
survey of Asian Americans living in the Houston area. He will also discuss how
UTMB can be involved in the work of the consortium and speak to the future
underrepresented minority research implications.
Kristina Arredondo, Student, Physician Assistant Studies Program,
UTMB. Kristina will discuss her work in Frontera de Salud and describe some of
the disparities the students encounter when serving patients in the Rio Grande
Valley through that program.

returns to the UTMB campus cable lineup. For two weeks beginning Monday, July ,
UTMB's channel 53 will offer 'round-the-clock programs and features--produced by
UTMB and others--that highlight the importance of diversity and its importance
at our institution. It's high quality, highly informative and very
entertaining. The schedule and details on the programming will be posted in the
