 From American
G. I. Forum letter to State Department of Health
An example of Garcia’s many efforts to
improve the health standards of children in Texas’ segregated public schools.

The Novelist Edna Ferber sought out Dr. Garcia
in the early 1950’s, while researching a book she planned about the Southwest
in the 1940’s and 1950’s. She later modeled the character of a Mexican-American
doctor in ‘Giant," her 1952 novel set in Texas, after Dr. Garcia.
"School meet attendance urged", February
2, 1973
Dr. Garcia often told the story that he
decided to get an education soon after a teacher told him, "No Mexican
will ever make an ‘A’ in my class." This made him particularly sensitive
to educational discrimination.
